Breaking the Night Fast (Breakfast) on Dates
The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever takes seven 'Ajwah dates in the morning will not be harmed by poison or sorcery on that day.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 5445, Sahih Muslim 2047, narrated by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas ra.)
Svenska: Profeten ﷺ sade: 'Den som äter sju Ajwa-dadlar på morgonen skall inte skadas av gift eller magi den dagen.'
Sahih al-Bukhari 5445, Sahih Muslim 2047 (Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, the seven 'Ajwah dates hadith); Ibn Hajar Fath al-Bari and al-Nawawi Sharh Muslim commentaries
The story
'A'ishah ra. narrated that the Prophet ﷺ would eat dates in the morning when they were available, and his household kept them on hand. The hadith of seven 'Ajwahs is from Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, one of the ten promised Paradise. The chain of narration is one of the strongest in the Bukhari collection.
Why it's here
The Prophet ﷺ named a specific food (the 'Ajwah date of Madinah), a specific quantity (seven), a specific time (the morning), and a specific protection (poison and sorcery). The hadith is in the Two Sahihs, the highest tier of authenticity. The protection is named directly. The classical scholars (Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari, al-Nawawi in Sharh Muslim) note that 'Ajwah is the most specific blessing, while other dates carry partial barakah.
Try it today
1. Get 'Ajwah dates if available (specialty Islamic grocers carry them). Other date varieties carry general barakah even if not the specific protection.
2. Eat seven 'Ajwah dates in the morning, with the niyyah of following the Sunnah.
3. Pair with a glass of water (Sunnah of the morning drink).
In your day
Modern breakfasts are heavy with refined sugar and processed grains. The Prophetic breakfast was light, dense in nutrients, and structured around dates. The science has caught up: dates are high in fiber, potassium, and slow-release sugars; they pair well with intermittent fasting; they protect blood sugar through the morning. The Sunnah is also the wisdom.
A reflection to carry
Breaking the night-fast on dates: the Prophetic suhūr/breakfast pattern. ʿĀʾishah ra.: 'The Prophet ﷺ would not eat in the morning until he had broken his fast on dates.' Dates were the Prophetic structural first-food.
Read the longer reflection
Modern nutrition science confirms: dates provide rapid glucose, fiber, and minerals after the overnight fast. The Prophetic-named odd-numbers preference (3, 5, 7) is preserved in his eating-patterns. Cure: keep dates available; consume 3-7 dates as first food after waking; pair with water. The Prophet ﷺ specifically praised ʿajwah dates from Madinah (Bukhārī 5445: 'Whoever eats seven ʿajwah dates in the morning, no poison or magic will harm him that day'). Modern application: build the date-first pattern as morning ritual; replace the immediate-coffee or skip-breakfast defaults with the Prophetic dates-first.
