The Two Rakʿahs Sunnah Before Fajr

The hadith

رَكْعَتَا الْفَجْرِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The two rakʿahs of Fajr are better than the world and what is in it.' Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 725, narrated by ʿĀ'ishah ra.

Svenska: Profeten ﷺ sade: 'De två rakat före Fajr är bättre än hela världen och allt den innehåller.'

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 725 (ʿĀ'ishah, 'better than the world'); Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1163, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 724 (Prophet's diligence); Muslim 726 (al-Kāfirūn + al-Ikhlāṣ recitation)

The story

ʿĀ'ishah ra. narrates that the Prophet ﷺ would pray the two rakʿahs at home, lightly (i.e., not prolonging them), and then go out to the masjid for Fajr. The lightness was deliberate: the value is in the doing, not in the length. He would often recite Sūrat al-Kāfirūn in the first rakʿah and Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ in the second (Muslim 726), so the two rakʿahs themselves became a daily statement of tawḥīd.

Why it's here

Of all the regular sunan (al-rawātib), the two rakʿahs before Fajr are the most emphasized. ʿĀ'ishah ra. narrated: 'The Prophet ﷺ was never more diligent about any voluntary prayer than the two rakʿahs before Fajr.' (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1163, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 724.) When he said they are 'better than the world and what is in it,' he set the price-tag of the dunyā in front of the price-tag of these two rakʿahs. The dunyā loses by an enormous margin.

Try it today

1. Wake early enough to fit in the two rakʿahs before the iqāmah of Fajr.
2. Pray them at home if possible, lightly (around 5 minutes total).

3. Recite al-Kāfirūn in the first rakʿah, al-Ikhlāṣ in the second (Sunnah).

4. Then go to the masjid for Fajr (or pray the farḍ at home with full focus).

In your day

For most modern Muslims, this is the make-or-break sunnah of the day. Set a 4:30 AM alarm if Fajr is at 5:00. The fifteen-minute buffer is the gateway. Do not skip it. The Prophet ﷺ priced them above the world.

A reflection to carry

The two rakʿahs sunnah of Fajr: praying the two-rakʿah Sunnah before the obligatory Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ: 'The two rakʿahs of Fajr are better than the world and what is in it.' (Muslim 725.)

Read the longer reflection

The Prophetic statement is structurally severe: a 5-minute act is better than the entirety of dunyā. ʿĀʾishah ra. reported that the Prophet ﷺ was never more particular about any nawafil-prayer than the two rakʿahs of Fajr (Bukhārī 1163). Recite Sūrat al-Kāfirūn in the first rakʿah and Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ in the second (the Prophet's ﷺ established practice). Cure: prioritize the two rakʿahs even when running late for Fajr; if you would miss the obligatory by praying the Sunnah, pray the obligatory first and the Sunnah after sunrise. The Prophet's ﷺ statement does not say 'better if convenient'; it names absolute superiority.
