The Book of Etiquette of Traveling

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 167

The Desirability of undertaking a Journey in a Group and appointing a Leader

Travel exposes a person to dangers and to the loneliness of the road, and this chapter answers both with companionship and order. The Prophet (peace be upon him) warns against journeying alone and urges believers to set out together, and once together, to appoint one of them as a leader.

Across these hadith notice a gentle teaching about community and structure, the lone traveler is left more open to the whisperings of Shaytan, while a group held together under one leader is protected and well ordered. The chapter quietly shows that Islam values unity, mutual care, and clear responsibility, even on something as ordinary as a trip.

Hadith 958

Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Were people to know of what I know about the dangers of travelling alone, no rider would travel alone at night." [Al-Bukhari].

In plain words

The Prophet warned that if people understood the dangers he knew about travelling alone at night, no one would ride out by themselves.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "A single rider is (accompanied with) Satan and two riders are (accompanied with) two Satans. Three riders form a group." [At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud].

In plain words

A lone or paired rider is left more exposed to Satan, but three travelling together form a proper group, so the Prophet encouraged journeying in company.

Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The best number of companions is four; the best detachment is four hundred and the best army is four thousand; and twelve thousand men will not be defeated as a result of smallness of number." [At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud].

In plain words

The Prophet pointed to good numbers for companions and groups, and reassured that a large body of believers will not be defeated merely because of being few.
