Etiquette of Drinking Water

Even something as ordinary as a drink of water becomes an act of worship when it follows the Prophet's way. This chapter gathers the small, deliberate habits he kept around drinking: pausing to breathe in two or three sips rather than gulping, opening with Bismillah and closing with Al-hamdu lillah, and never breathing back into the cup itself.

Watch too how the cup is passed. Whoever begins gets to choose, and then it moves to the right, even when an honoured elder or a leader sits on the other side. The lesson is gentleness and fairness woven into the most everyday moment, treating the body with care and the gathering with order.

Hadith 756

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to breathe three times in the course of a drink (he used to drink in three gulps). [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

He would pause to breathe outside the cup, drinking in three sips rather than gulping all at once. A gentle, healthier way of drinking.

Hadith 757

Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Do not drink in one gulp like a camel, but in two or three (gulps). Mention the Name of Allah (i.e., say Bismillah) when you start drinking and praise Him (i.e., say Al-hamdu lillah) after you have finished (drinking)." [At- Tirmidhi].

In plain words

Do not gulp water down in one go like a camel, but drink in two or three sips, naming Allah at the start and praising Him at the end. Care for the body wrapped in remembrance.

Hadith 758

Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade breathing into the vessel while drinking. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

He forbade breathing into the drinking vessel. Breathe outside the cup to keep the water clean and pleasant.

Hadith 759

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Milk mixed with water was brought to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). On his right side was sitting a bedouin and on his left was sitting Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him). He (ﷺ) drank from it and handed the rest to the bedouin saying, "One who is on the right has preference, then again the one who is on the right." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

He drank, then passed the cup to the person on his right, saying the right side has preference. Fairness and order in how a shared drink moves around.

Hadith 760

Sahl bin Sa'd (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

A drink was brought to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he drank (some) from it. On his right was a boy and on his left were some elderly people. He (ﷺ) said to the boy, "Would you permit me to give rest of this drink to these on my left?" The boy said: "O Messenger of Allah, I would certainly not give preference to anyone in anything that might come to me from you." So he (ﷺ) handed over the rest of the drink to him. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

With a boy on his right and elders on his left, he asked the boy's permission before giving the rest to the elders, and the boy chose to keep his turn. The right-hand turn is the boy's own to give.
