The Book About the Etiquette of Eating

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 110

Merit of Sharing Food

This chapter celebrates the barakah that grows when hands are joined over a single meal. The Prophet (peace be upon him) tells us that food meant for two can satisfy three, and food for four can satisfy more still. The arithmetic of generosity is not ordinary arithmetic: sharing does not divide a blessing, it multiplies it.

The heart of the lesson is to open the table rather than guard it. Welcoming others to eat with us draws down increase from Allah, and a portion offered in hospitality stretches further than we would ever expect.

Hadith 754

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The food of two persons suffices for three persons, and the food of three persons suffices for four persons." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

Food meant for two can satisfy three, and food for three can stretch to four. Sharing does not shrink a blessing; it widens it.

Hadith 755

Jabir bin 'Abdullah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The food of one person suffices for two, the food of two persons suffices for four persons, and the food of four persons suffices for eight persons." [Muslim].

In plain words

Food for one is enough for two, food for two for four, and food for four for eight. The more hands join the meal, the further the blessing reaches.
