Prohibition of Plastering and Building over the Graves

باب النهي عن تجصيص القبر والبناء عليه

Closely linked to the chapter before it, this one records the prohibition of plastering graves into permanent structures, sitting on them, or building over them. It guards both the simplicity of how Muslims bury their dead and the sincerity of how they relate to them.

Underlying the guidance is a concern for humility and pure devotion: that graves not become grand monuments or places that draw veneration away from Allah alone. The broad spiritual point is what concerns us here; the particulars of practice are matters for the scholars.

Hadith 1767

Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

عن جابر رضي الله عنه قال‏:‏ نهى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أن يجصص القبر، وأن يقعد عليه، وأن يبنى عليه‏.‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه مسلم‏)‏‏)‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade that the graves should be plastered (made into permanent structures), used as sitting places (for the people) or building over them. [Muslim].

In plain words

The Prophet forbade plastering graves into permanent structures, sitting on them, or building over them. This keeps burial simple and devotion turned to Allah alone.
