The Book of the Prohibited actions

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 341

Undesirability of Glancing in one Direction of the other during Prayer

Prayer is a private audience with Allah, and where the eyes wander the heart tends to follow. This short chapter warns against turning the head or letting the gaze drift during Salat for no real need, because every stray glance is a piece of presence quietly lost. The Arabic word here is iltifat, the turning away of attention, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) frames it not as a small slip but as something an enemy actively steals.

Notice how both hadith treat distraction as theft rather than mere carelessness. The lesson is not anxiety about the smallest movement but a gentle pull back toward focus: guard your gaze in prayer the way you would guard a conversation with someone you deeply love and respect.

Hadith 1755

'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said:

I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about random looks in Salat (prayer), and he replied, "It is something which Satan snatches from the slave's Salat." [Al-Bukhari].

In plain words

Aishah asked about glancing around in prayer, and the Prophet said it is something Satan steals from a worshipper's Salat. Stray looks quietly rob us of the focus prayer deserves.

Hadith 1756

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me, "Beware of looking around in Salat (prayer), because random looks in Salat are a cause of destruction. If there should be no help from it, it is permissible in the voluntary and not in obligatory Salat." [At-Tirmidhi].

In plain words

The Prophet warned against looking around in prayer, calling it harmful, while noting it is more excusable in voluntary prayer than in the obligatory one when there is genuine need. The lesson is to guard our attention in Salat.
