Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 321

Prohibition of Conferring a Title of Honor upon a Sinner, a Hypocrite, and the Like

Words carry weight, and the names we hand out can quietly endorse what a person stands for. This short chapter touches a subtle danger: dressing up wrongdoing in the language of honor. To call an open sinner or a hypocrite a 'chief' or 'master' (in Arabic, sayyid) is to lend him a dignity he has not earned, and to risk normalizing the very thing he should be turning away from.

Notice the care here for both the heart of the speaker and the health of the community. Buruja's takeaway is simple: hold your praise honest. Respect titles belong to those who carry them rightly, not to anyone who happens to wield influence.

Hadith 1725

Buraidah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Do not address a hypocrite with the title of chief, (or similar titles of respect) for even if he deserves this title you will invite Allah's Wrath by using it for him." [Abu Dawud].

In plain words

Addressing a hypocrite with titles of honour like 'chief' is warned against, since lending him undeserved dignity in this way risks Allah's displeasure. Keep praise honest.
