Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 297

Prohibition of Plucking Grey Hairs

باب النهي عن نتف الشيب من اللحية والرأس وغيرهما وعن نتف الأمرد شعر لحيته عند أول طلوعه

Grey hair, the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught elsewhere, is a light for the believer on the Day of Resurrection, so this chapter warns against tearing it out in a chase after a younger look. The single hadith here does not name grey hair at all, which tells you something: an-Nawawi places it under this heading because the deeper issue is not the hair but the impulse behind it, reshaping ourselves to a standard Allah never set.

The Arabic word to sit with is shayb, the greying that comes with age and dignity. Notice how the chapter reaches for a broad principle rather than a narrow ruling: anything we introduce into the religion, or any quiet contempt for the way Allah has made us, is measured against what He and His Messenger actually gave us. The fine points of grooming belong to the scholars; the heart-lesson is contentment with how He has fashioned you.

Hadith 1647

'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said:

وعن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت‏:‏ قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏:‏ ‏ "‏من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد‏" ‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه مسلم‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He who does something contrary to our way (i.e., Islam) will have it rejected." [Muslim].

In plain words

Whoever introduces into the faith something that is not part of it will have it rejected. Placed here, it warns against altering ourselves or our religion beyond what Allah and His Messenger gave.
