Prohibition of Recounting of Favors

The Arabic name of this fault is al-mann, the habit of giving someone a favour and then holding it over them, reminding them of it to belittle them or to bind them in debt. The chapter teaches that a good deed can be undone by the tongue that boasts of it, because true generosity seeks Allah's pleasure and asks nothing back, while recounting the favour reveals that the giver was really after status over the one he helped.

Its single hadith places this sin in frightening company. Notice that the one who reminds people of his charity is named alongside the arrogant and the swindler as someone Allah will refuse to speak to, look at, or purify on the Day of Resurrection. The lesson is sobering: how you give can corrupt what you give, so guard the gift by guarding the heart and the tongue behind it.

Hadith 1588

Abu Dharr (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Prophet (ﷺ) observed: "There are three (types of) people to whom Allah will neither speak on the Day of Resurrection nor look at them nor purify them, and they will have a painful chastisement." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) repeated it three times. Abu Dharr (May Allah be pleased with him) remarked: "They are ruined. Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?" Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "One who lets down his lower garments (below his ankels) out of arrogance, one who boasts of his favours done to another; and who sells his goods by taking a false oath." [Muslim].

In plain words

Among those Allah will not speak to, look at, or purify is the person who gives a favour and then keeps reminding people of it. Boasting about your charity can ruin the very good you did.
