The Book of the Prohibited actions

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 270

Prohibition of Envy

Envy, hasad in Arabic, is defined in this chapter's title as wishing that a blessing be stripped from the one who has it, whether a blessing of religion or of worldly life. It is one of the most corrosive diseases of the heart precisely because it resents what Allah has chosen to give another.

The single hadith here gives a vivid image of what envy does to the one who carries it. Buruja's encouragement is to flip the impulse: where you feel envy rising, ask Allah to bless that person and to bless you too, and watch resentment lose its fuel.

Hadith 1569

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Beware of envy because envy consumes (destroys) the virtues just as the fire consumes the firewood," or he said "grass." [Abu Dawud].

In plain words

Guard against envy, for it eats away your good deeds the way fire devours dry wood. Resenting what Allah gave another quietly destroys your own reward.
