The Book of the Prohibited actions

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 258

Prohibition of Carrying tales of the Officers

Here the warning narrows to a particular and tempting form of tale-carrying, relaying people's words and faults to those in authority when there is no genuine need, such as preventing real harm. It is the impulse to report and inform, dressed up as loyalty.

The single hadith of this chapter shows the Prophet (peace be upon him) refusing such reports about his own Companions. The point to carry away is the value he places on a clean heart, an unburdened breast free of grudges planted by gossip, both for himself toward others and as a model for how we should wish to meet one another.

Hadith 1539

Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "None of my Companions should convey to me anything regarding another because I desire to meet everyone of you with a clean heart." [Abu Dawud and At- Tirmidhi].

In plain words

He asked that no one report to him the faults of others, because he wished to meet each Companion with a clean, untroubled heart. Carrying people's words to those in authority plants grudges best left unsown.
