The Book of the Remembrance of Allah

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 246

The Book of the Etiquette of Sleeping, Lying, and Sitting etc

باب ما يقوله عند نومه واستيقاظه

Sleep is a small death, and waking is a small resurrection. This brief chapter gathers the Prophet's habit, peace be upon him, of framing both moments with the Name of Allah, so that the last thought before unconsciousness and the first thought on returning to life are both turned toward the Creator.

The single hadith here pairs a sleeping supplication with a waking one. Notice the symmetry, dying and living, then praise for being brought back, ending with the reminder that to Allah is the final return. The takeaway is to bookend each day with conscious surrender and gratitude.

Hadith 1446

Hudhaifah and Abu Dharr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

عن حذيفة، وأبي ذر رضي الله عنهما قالا‏:‏ كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا أوى إلى فراشه قال‏:‏ ‏"‏باسمك اللهم أموت وأحيا‏"‏ وإذا استيقظ قال‏:‏ ‏"‏الحمد لله الذي أحيانا بعد ما أماتنا وإليه النشور‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه البخاري‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

Whenever the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to bed, he would supplicate: "Bismika-Allahumma amut wa ahya (With Your Name, O Allah, I die and return to life)"; and when he woke up, he would supplicate thus: "Al-hamdu lillahilladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana, wa ilaihin-nushur (All praise belongs to Allah Who has restored us back to life after causing us to die; and to Him shall we return)." [Al-Bukhari]

In plain words

At bedtime the Prophet entrusted his dying and living to Allah, and on waking he praised Allah for restoring him to life and recalled the return to Him. It teaches us to bookend each day with surrender and gratitude.
