The Book of the Remembrance of Allah

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 245

Remembrance of Allah in all Conditions

We sometimes imagine that remembering Allah belongs only to set times, the prayer mat, the mosque, a quiet moment. This short chapter dismantles that idea. The Arabic word here is dhikr, the remembrance of Allah, and an-Nawawi opens with the simple report that the Prophet, peace be upon him, kept his Lord on his tongue and in his heart through every state he passed through.

Notice how the two hadith stretch dhikr across the whole of life. The first sets the principle that no condition is too ordinary for the Name of Allah, and the second carries that principle into the most private corner of a marriage. The takeaway is that a believer's connection to Allah is meant to be continuous, not occasional.

Hadith 1444

'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to remember Allah at all times. [Muslim].

In plain words

The Prophet kept Allah in his remembrance at all times. No state of life was treated as off-limits for remembering Allah.

Hadith 1445

Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If anyone intends to have (sexual intercourse) with his wife, he should say: "Bismillah! Allahumma janibnash-Shaitana, wa jannibish-Shaitana ma razaqtana (In the Name of Allah, O Allah! Keep us away from Satan and keep Satan away from what You have bestowed upon us);' and if Allah has ordained a child for them, Satan will never harm him." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

Before intimacy with one's spouse, saying the taught words asking Allah to keep them and the coming child from Satan brings protection from his harm. Even private married life is begun with Allah's name.
