Wudu & Bathroom
Remembrance at the edge of purity
Say the entering du'a before you step in, and the leaving du'a once you are out. Say Bismillah as you begin to wash, and the words of witness once your wudu is complete. The bathroom du'as are said outside the bathroom itself, or silently within the heart while inside.

Entering the bathroom
[Bismillāhi] Allāhumma 'innī 'a`ūdhu bika minal-khubthi walkhabā'ith.
[In the Name of Allah]. O Allah, I seek protection in You from evil and the evil ones (or, from the evil male and female Jinn).
sahihAl-Bukhari 1/45, Muslim 1/283Said before you step in. The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge in Allah from harm at the very threshold, knowing these are places where the soul is exposed.

Leaving the bathroom
Ghufrānaka
I seek Your forgiveness.
Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and At-TirmidhiA single word, Ghufranaka, asking forgiveness. A beautiful sunnah: having been relieved of harm, the first thing on the tongue is a plea for pardon.

Bismillāhi
In the Name of Allah
sahihAbu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and AhmadBegin your wash with the Name of Allah, and the whole act becomes worship.

The testimony after wudu
'Ash-hadu 'an lā 'ilāha 'illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu wa 'ash-hadu 'anna Muḥammadan `abduhu wa Rasūluhu.
I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger.
sahihMuslim 1/209The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever completes his wudu well and then says this will have the eight gates of Paradise opened for him, to enter by whichever he wishes.

Among the repentant and the purified
Allāhummaj`alnī minat-tawwābīna waj`alnī minal-mutaṭahhirīn.
O Allah, make me among those who turn to You in repentance, and make me among those who are purified.
sahihAt-Tirmidhi 1/78A second sunnah du'a after wudu, asking to be counted with those who turn back to Allah and those whom He keeps clean.

Glory and praise after wudu
Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdika, 'ash-hadu 'an lā 'ilāha 'illā 'Anta, 'astaghfiruka wa 'atūbu 'ilayk.
Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise; I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship but You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.
sahihAn-Nasa'i, 'Amalul-Yawm wal-Laylah, pThe words of tasbih and seeking forgiveness, reported as a seal upon the wudu, written and kept until the Day of Resurrection.
Worship in the small things
Wudu is not only washing; it is the light a believer carries to the prayer, and the sunnah is that minor sins fall away with the water. To begin it with His Name and seal it with the testimony of faith is to make the whole act count twice.
O Allah, make us among those who are purified, and let no corner of our day be empty of Your remembrance.
Questions
- Do I recite the bathroom du'as inside the bathroom?
- No. Say the entering du'a just before you step in, and the leaving du'a as soon as you come out. Inside, the Name of Allah is not spoken aloud, so these words belong at the door, not within.
- What do I say before wudu?
- Begin with Bismillah (In the Name of Allah) as you start to wash. When you have finished, say the testimony of faith, and the sunnah du'a asking to be made among those who repent and those who are purified.
- Why say a du'a for something as ordinary as wudu?
- Because the Prophet ﷺ taught us that nothing is too ordinary for the remembrance of Allah. Beginning wudu with His Name and ending it with the shahadah turns a daily routine into an act of worship that lifts the soul along with the body.
