Leaving & Entering the Home

أذكار الخروج من المنزل ودخوله

Words for the doorway

Say the leaving du'a as you step out of your home, and the entering du'a as you come back in. The sunnah adds that you greet those inside with salam as you enter, and that mentioning Allah's Name at the door leaves no place for the devil to lodge for the night.

  1. 1

    Leaving the home

    بِسْمِ اللهِ ، تَوَكَّلْـتُ عَلى اللهِ وَلا حَوْلَ وَلا قُـوَّةَ إِلاّ بِالله

Bismillāhi, tawakkaltu `alallāhi, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.

In the Name of Allah, I have placed my trust in Allah, there is no might and no power except by Allah.

    sahihAbu Dawud 4/325, At-Tirmidhi 5/490

The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says this on leaving is told: you are guided, sufficed and protected, and the devil withdraws from him.

  2. 2

Refuge from misguiding and being wronged

Allāhumma 'innī 'a`ūdhu bika 'an 'aḍilla, 'aw 'uḍalla, 'aw 'azilla, 'aw 'uzalla, 'aw 'aẓlima, 'aw 'uẓlama, 'aw 'ajhala 'aw yujhala `alayya.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You lest I misguide others, or I am misguided by others, lest I cause others to err or I am caused to err, lest I abuse others or be abused, and lest I behave foolishly or meet with the foolishness of others.

    sahihAt-Tirmidhi 3/152 and Sahih Ibn Majah 2/336

A second du'a for setting out, seeking refuge from straying or being led astray, from wronging or being wronged, and from acting or being treated foolishly.

  3. 3

    Entering the home

    بِسْـمِ اللهِ وَلَجْنـا، وَبِسْـمِ اللهِ خَـرَجْنـا، وَعَلـى رَبِّنـا تَوَكّلْـن

Bismillāhi walajnā, wa bismillāhi kharajnā, wa `ala Rabbinā tawakkalnā

In the Name of Allah we enter, in the Name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we depend [then say As-Salāmu `Alaykum to those present].

    sahihAbu Dawud 4/325

Mention Allah's Name on entering and greet your household with salam. When His Name is said at the door, the devil finds no shelter inside for the night.

Guarded coming and going

When you leave with these words, the Prophet ﷺ said it is announced for you: you are guided, sufficed and protected, and the devil turns away from a person so guarded. Few sentences carry that much shelter.

O Allah, guard our going out and our coming in, and let our homes be houses in which Your Name is remembered.

Questions

What do I say when I leave my house?
Say the du'a of leaving, placing your trust in Allah and acknowledging that there is no power except by Him. The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever says it is told: you are guided, defended and protected, and the devil is turned away from him.
What do I say when I come home?
Say the du'a of entering, mentioning the Name of Allah, and greet those inside with salam. When a person mentions Allah's Name on entering, the devil finds no place to spend the night in that home.
Do I need to say these out loud?
A gentle voice is good, especially the salam to your household, but the heart is what matters. Say them with awareness as you cross the threshold, even quietly, and the sunnah is kept.
