The du'as for the home you are building
Match the du'a to the moment. There is the du'a you say to a couple just married, the husband's du'a over his wife at the start, and the words said quietly before intimacy. For a newborn there are the words of congratulation with their reply, and the Prophet's ﷺ own seeking of refuge for his grandchildren.
Recite the Arabic, lean on the transliteration while it is still new on your tongue, and read the meaning so your heart knows what you are asking for. None of these are long. Said with presence, each is the work of a breath.

Congratulating new parents (and the reply)
Bārakallāhu laka fi ‘l-mawhūbi lak, wa shakarta ‘l-wāhib, wa balagha ashuddah, wa ruziqta birrah. The reply of the person being congratulated is to say:
May Allah bless you with His gift to you, and may you (the new parent) give thanks, may the child reach the maturity of years, and may you be granted its righteousness. The reply of the person being congratulated is to say: May Allah bless you, and shower His blessings upon you, and may Allah reward you well and bestow upon you its like and reward you abundantly
sahihAn-Nawawi, al-AdhkarpThe words to greet a new birth: a prayer that Allah bless the gift, that the parents give thanks, and that the child reach maturity in righteousness. The parent then replies, asking Allah to reward and bless the one who came to congratulate them.

Seeking refuge for a child
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek Allah's protection for Al-Hasan and Al-Husain by saying:
I seek protection for you in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every envious blameworthy eye.
sahihAl-Bukhari4/119The Prophet ﷺ would say this over his grandsons al-Hasan and al-Husayn, seeking their protection in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil, every harmful creature, and every envious eye. A shield to keep over your own children.

A husband's du'a over his wife
When any of you marries a woman or purchases a maid-servant then let him say:
When any of you marries a woman or purchases a maid-servant then let him say: O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of her, and the goodness upon which You have created her, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of her, and from the evil upon which You have created her. If you purchase a camel then take hold of the top of its hump and say the same.
sahihAbu Dawud 2/248 and Ibn Majah 1/617Taught for the start of a marriage: asking Allah for the goodness in her and the goodness she was created upon, and seeking refuge from any evil in her or in her nature. A du'a of trust at the very beginning.

Before intimacy
Bismillāh. Allāhumma jannibnash-Shayṭān, wa jannibish-Shayṭāna mā razaqtanā.
With the Name of Allah. O Allah, keep the Devil away from us, and keep the Devil away from that which You provide for us.
sahihAl-Bukhari 6/141, Muslim 2/1028Said quietly between husband and wife. The Prophet ﷺ taught that if a child is decreed from a union begun with these words, the shaytan will never be able to harm it.
A house built on these
Marriage and children are among the heaviest trusts Allah gives, and the most beloved. The sunnah does not leave you to carry them alone. It hands you words for the joining, words for the bed, words over the cradle, and a shield of refuge for every child you raise. Say them, and keep saying them, and let the home you are building rest in hands that never tire.
O Allah, bless what You have joined and what You have given, keep the shaytan far from our spouses and our children, and let every soul under our roof be a coolness to our eyes and a people of Paradise.
Questions
- What do you say to congratulate someone on a new baby in Islam?
- The transmitted words ask Allah to bless the gift, to let the new parents give thanks, and to let the child reach maturity in righteousness. The parent then replies, asking Allah to bless and reward the one who congratulated them. It is a far richer exchange than a simple 'congratulations'.
- Is there a du'a to say before intimacy with my spouse?
- Yes. The Prophet ﷺ taught that if a husband says 'Bismillah, O Allah keep the shaytan away from us and from what You provide for us' before intimacy, then if a child is decreed from that union, the shaytan will never be able to harm it. Say it quietly between yourselves.
- How did the Prophet ﷺ seek protection for children?
- He would seek refuge for his grandsons al-Hasan and al-Husayn in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil, every harmful creature, and every envious eye. It is a sunnah you can keep over your own children, by day or at night.
