The adhkar of the pilgrim through the rites

These follow the order of the rites. The talbiyah begins at ihram and is repeated again and again until you stone the first pillar. At the Black Stone during tawaf you say Allahu Akbar. Between the two corners you recite the verse 'Rabbana atina'. On Safa and Marwah you make the remembrance of the sa'i. On Arafah you say the best of all du'a, at Muzdalifah you stand in remembrance facing the qiblah, and at the jamarat you say Allahu Akbar with each pebble.

Recite the Arabic, lean on the transliteration while you learn it, and read the meaning so your heart is in each station with your feet. Between every prescribed word, the door of personal du'a is wide open: ask Allah for whatever you long for.

  1. 1

    The talbiyah

Labbayk-Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna ‘l-ḥamda, wanni`mata, laka wa ‘l-mulk, lā sharīka lak.

I am here at Your service, O Allah, I am here at Your service. I am here at Your service, You have no partner, I am here at Your service. Surely the praise, and blessings are Yours, and the dominion. You have no partner.

    sahihMuslim 2/841

The pilgrim's answer to Allah's call, 'Here I am at Your service.' Begun at ihram and repeated abundantly, with the voice raised, until the first pillar is stoned. The sound of Hajj itself.

  2. 2

    At the Black Stone

Allah is the Most Great. (Said while facing the Black Stone at the start of each circuit of tawaf.)

    sahihSahih al-Bukhari (Fath al-Bari 3/476)

During tawaf, each time he passed the corner of the Black Stone the Prophet ﷺ would point toward it and say Allahu Akbar. The remembrance that marks every circuit around the House.

  3. 3

    Between the two corners

    1x

Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

    Qur'anAl-Baqarah 2:201

Recited during tawaf between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone: the Qur'anic verse asking for good in this world and the next and refuge from the Fire (al-Baqarah 2:201), the most comprehensive request a heart can make.

  4. 4

    On Safa and Marwah

    3x

Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) approached Mount Safa, he would recite:

Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah; I begin with what Allah began with. (Then, facing the qiblah on the hill: Allahu Akbar, and there is no god but Allah alone, with praise and supplication.)

    sahihMuslim 2/888

The remembrance of the sa'i. Facing the Ka'bah on each hill, the Prophet ﷺ declared Allah's oneness and greatness, affirmed that He kept His promise and aided His servant, then made personal du'a, repeating it three times on each.

  5. 5

    The du'a of Arafah

Lā 'ilāha 'illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu wa huwa `alā kulli shay'in qadīr.

None has the right to be worshipped but Allah Alone, Who has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things.

    hasanAt-Tirmidhi 3/184, and also Silsilatul-'Ahadith As-Sahihah 4/6

The Prophet ﷺ said the best du'a is the du'a of the Day of Arafah, and the best of what he and the prophets before him said was this declaration of Allah's oneness. The heart of the entire Hajj.

  6. 6

    At Muzdalifah

(At al-Mash'ar al-Haram, facing the qiblah: declaring Allah's greatness, His oneness, and supplicating until daybreak.)

    sahihMuslim 2/891

At al-Mash'ar al-Haram the Prophet ﷺ faced the qiblah and stood in du'a, magnifying Allah and declaring His oneness, until the sky grew light, leaving just before sunrise.

  7. 7

    At the jamarat

Allah is the Most Great. (Said with each pebble cast at the jamarat.)

    sahihSahih al-Bukhari (Fath al-Bari 3/581)

The Prophet ﷺ said Allahu Akbar with each pebble thrown at the three pillars. After the first and second he would step forward, face the qiblah, raise his hands and make du'a; after the last he left without standing.

Answering the call

The whole of Hajj is one long answer to a call. 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk', here I am, again and again, from the first step in ihram to the last pebble thrown. These adhkar are how the pilgrim says, at every station, that he came because Allah called and he wants nothing but Him. Learn them, and the journey becomes what it was always meant to be: a body in motion and a heart that never stops returning.

O Allah, write our names among the pilgrims to Your House, accept from us as You accepted from those before us, and let us answer Your call with a heart that means every word of it.

Questions

What is the talbiyah and when do I say it?
The talbiyah is 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk', the pilgrim's answer to Allah's call: 'Here I am at Your service.' You begin it the moment you enter ihram and repeat it abundantly, raising your voice with it, until you stone the first pillar (Jamratul-Aqabah) on the day of Eid.
What do you say during tawaf around the Ka'bah?
There is no fixed du'a for the whole of tawaf; you may ask Allah for anything. At the Black Stone you say Allahu Akbar, and between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone you recite the verse 'Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the next, and save us from the punishment of the Fire'.
What is the best du'a to say on the Day of Arafah?
The Prophet ﷺ said the best du'a is the du'a of the Day of Arafah, and the best thing he and the prophets before him said was the declaration of Allah's oneness. Arafah is the heart of Hajj; spend it asking, facing the qiblah, with raised hands.
