The 365 · Verses · Day 297 · Self-Accountability

Every act of worship benefits YOU. Every act of disobedience harms YOU. Allah is not the recipient. You are. Re-read your week in that light.

Qur'an Qur'ān 45:15 (al-Jāthiyah)

Whoever does righteousness, it is for himself; whoever does evil, against himself. Then to your Lord you will be returned.

Svenska: Den som gör rättfärdighet, det är för honom själv. Den som gör ont, det är mot honom själv. Sedan skall ni föras tillbaka till er Herre.

The story

Sūrat al-Jāthiyah is the surah of the kneeling: every soul kneels on the Day, awaiting its verdict. The surah's middle (verse 15) compresses the principle: the verdict is being earned now. Each deed is a self-investment or a self-injury. Allah is not enriched by your worship nor diminished by your sin.

In the language

Fa-li-nafsih, for himself. Fa-ʿalayhā, against himself (the soul). The prepositions do the work: li (for, benefit) versus ʿalā (upon, burden). Allah's economy is exact: the deed lands where it was aimed, but the aim was always at the doer.

Why this verse

The verse strips two illusions at once. First: that Allah benefits from your worship (He does not). Second: that disobedience harms only Him (it does not). Both columns land back on you. The realization shifts worship from transaction to self-rescue.

Bring it into today

Day four. The Verses cluster's principle: your soul is the recipient. Every salah is a deposit in YOUR account. Every gossip is a withdrawal from YOUR balance. Today: act for yourself, against your enemy (the nafs), in the direction of the Lord.

A reflection to carry

There is a hadith qudsi that grounds this verse. Allah said: O My servants, if the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you, were all as righteous as the most righteous heart among you, it would not add to My kingdom in the slightest. And if the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you, were all as wicked as the most wicked heart among you, it would not diminish My kingdom in the slightest (Muslim). Allah is not enriched. Allah is not diminished. The deeds are entirely for and against you. So when you skip a sunnah, do not say 'Allah does not need it.' Say: I did not need it for myself, while I clearly do.

Read the longer reflection

Imagine the universe Allah described in that hadith. If every human and every jinn from Ādam to the last person became as righteous as Abū Bakr, Allah's kingdom would not grow by an atom. If every human and every jinn became as wicked as Pharaoh, Allah's kingdom would not shrink by an atom. The recipient of all our worship is, in the cosmic ledger, ourselves. The recipient of all our sin is, in the cosmic ledger, ourselves. This destroys the merchant's mindset of worship (I give Allah, He gives me Paradise) and replaces it with the surgeon's: every salah heals my soul, every sin wounds it. The Day is when the wounds are inspected and the healing is graded. Yā Allāh, give us the awareness that every act we do is for or against our own souls. Let us prefer ourselves enough to obey You; let us love You enough to never call it preference. Āmīn.
