Qur'an 64:16

فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُمْ وَٱسْمَعُوا۟ وَأَطِيعُوا۟ وَأَنفِقُوا۟ خَيْرًا لِّأَنفُسِكُمْ ۗ وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِۦ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

Be mindful of God as much as you can; hear and obey; be charitable; it is for your own good. Those who are saved from their own meanness will be the prosperous ones. (Quran 64:16)

A reflection to carry

Allah opened this verse with the most merciful possible standard: 'fattaqū Allāha mā staṭaʿtum.' Fear Allah as much as you are able. Not 'fear Him perfectly.' Not 'fear Him as He deserves' (which is the impossible standard of a different verse, 3:102, that Allah lightened with this one). 'As much as you can.' Allah met us at our capacity. And then He attached three actions: hear, obey, spend. And He closed with the diagnostic: 'wa man yūqa shuḥḥa nafsihi fa-ulāʾika humu al-mufliḥūn.' Whoever is saved from the shuḥḥ of his own self, those are the prosperous. Note the precision. Allah did not name 'whoever spends' or 'whoever gives'; He named the believer SAVED from shuḥḥ. Shuḥḥ is the soul's structural miserliness, the chest-tightening that makes giving feel like loss. Allah is saying: the believer whose chest has been freed from this tightening is the one who succeeds. The opening of the chest precedes the giving. Ya akhī, ya ukhtī, the verse names both the discipline (fear, hear, obey, spend) and the inner condition (release from shuḥḥ). Both work together.

Yā Rabb, You opened this verse with mercy. 'Fattaqū Allāha mā staṭaʿtum.' Fear Allah as much as you are ABLE. You did not demand perfect taqwā (an impossible standard). You met us at our capacity. And then You named the four-fold practice: fear, hear, obey, spend. And You closed with the structural diagnostic: those saved from the shuḥḥ of their own self are the mufliḥūn, the prosperous. Forgive me, ya Allāh. Forgive every chest-tightening I have experienced at the moment of giving. The hesitation when the donation page loaded. The mental calculation that wanted to round down. The 'this is too much' that closed my hand. Each was shuḥḥ winning. And each was a small failure of the verse's closing condition: I was not yet saved from the miserliness of my own self. Save me, ya Rabb. Not by giving me more wealth; You have already given me sufficient. Save me by opening the chest. By removing the shuḥḥ. By making my hand light. And then place me among the mufliḥūn You named in this verse and at the opening of Sūrat al-Muʾminūn (23:1): 'qad aflaḥa al-muʾminūn.' Successful are the believers. Make my īmān the īmān of release from self-stinginess. And ya Allāh, on the days when I cannot fear You as You deserve to be feared, let me at least fear You as much as I am able, and let the smaller taqwā You accepted at my capacity grow into a larger taqwā by Your faḍl. Āmīn ya Razzāq.
