Yā Rabb, You exposed the habit of half-hearted giving in 2:267. You said: do not aim for the bad of what you have to give away, when you yourself would only accept it with your eyes closed. The grammar is precise. We have a hidden algorithm in our giving: when looking at the closet, we pull what we have not worn in three years; when looking at the pantry, we pull what is approaching its expiration; when looking at our budget, we round down to the cheapest convenient amount. We give the leftover. And You named this. You forbade it. Forgive me, ya Allāh. Forgive me for every food bag I packed with what I would not have eaten myself. For every coat I donated that I would not have worn to a wedding. For every donation amount I rounded down because the cause was 'general' rather than family. For every Eid gift I gave a poor cousin that was a tier below what I would have given a wealthy peer. Each was a small dishonoring of Your chosen recipients. Realign me, ya Rabb. Make my giving from the top of my inventory, not the bottom. Make my donations from the round-up, not the round-down. Make my Eid gifts to the poor of the same caliber as my Eid gifts to family. And ya Allāh, You closed the verse with Your name al-Ghaniyy. You are Self-Sufficient. The test of my giving is not Your need; it is my honor toward Your slaves. Let me honor them with the good of what You gave me. Āmīn ya Ghaniyy.
