Trust the Living who never dies. Everything else dies.


Qur'an Quran 25:58

وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱلْحَىِّ ٱلَّذِى لَا يَمُوتُ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِهِۦ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِهِۦ بِذُنُوبِ عِبَادِهِۦ خَبِيرًا

Put your trust in the Living [God] who never dies, and celebrate His praise. He knows the sins of His servants well enough. (Abdel Haleem)

The story

Ibn Kathīr: the verse comes in the context of Sūrat al-Furqān's discussion of the disbelievers' diversions (false gods, dead idols, social systems). The structural inversion: turn from the dying-objects of false-tawakkul to the Living-One who never dies. The Prophet ﷺ modeled this: when the Quraysh threatened the believers, when treaties were broken, when alliances shifted, the Prophetic posture was tawakkul on al-Ḥayy.

In the language

Al-Ḥayy (the Living) is one of Allah's beautiful names; appears in āyat al-kursi (Q 2:255: Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa al-Ḥayyu al-Qayyūm). The qualifier alladhī lā yamūt (who never dies) is structurally severe in its definitional permanence. Wa-kafā bihi (it is enough that He is): the structural sufficiency-formula. Khabīr (most-knowing): the structural divine attribute that obviates need for human reporting.

Why this verse

Q 25:58 names the structural object of tawakkul: al-Ḥayy alladhī lā yamūt (the Living who never dies). The Quranic distinction is severe: every other potential object of tawakkul (people, institutions, governments, wealth, social systems) eventually dies or fails; only Allah is structurally eternal. The believer who places tawakkul on anything-other-than-Allah is structurally placing trust on what will fail. The verse pairs the tawakkul-command with tasbīḥ-bi-ḥamdihi (glorification with praise) and the closing affirmation that Allah knows the servants' sins (no other reporter is needed).

Bring it into today

Audit your tawakkul-objects: when difficulty arises, where does your mind turn for solution? If toward people-with-power, money-in-account, social-position, you are placing tawakkul on dying objects. The verse redirects: turn to al-Ḥayy. The Companions modeled this redirect: even when they had powerful allies, their first turn was to Allah; the allies were asbāb, not the source.

A reflection to carry

The verse names al-Ḥayy alladhī lā yamūt as the structural object of tawakkul. The qualifier 'who never dies' distinguishes from every other potential trust-object: all others die or fail. The pairing with tasbīḥ-bi-ḥamdihi establishes that tawakkul is not passive waiting but active praise.

The classical scholars (Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn Rajab) wrote that this verse is the structural Quranic charter against the misplacement of tawakkul. Every form of misplaced trust (on wealth, on people, on institutions, on social-position, on health, on plans) is implicitly a placement of trust on something that will eventually die or fail. The Quranic alternative: the Living who never dies. The believer who internalizes this verse audits his actual psychological tawakkul-pattern: when difficulty arises, where does his mind turn first? The Quran's redirect: to al-Ḥayy. The pairing with tasbīḥ (subḥān Allāhi wa-bi-ḥamdihi) establishes that tawakkul is not isolated psychological state but is paired with active praise. The classical scholars: real tawakkul is praise + trust + dependence; the believer who places tawakkul without praise is missing the structural pairing. The closing affirmation (He is enough as Knower of His servants' sins) addresses a specific anxiety: the believer worried that his sins disqualify him from divine help. The verse responds: Allah already knows; no other reporter is needed; place tawakkul anyway. The structural mercy: the Living-Knower is also the Living-Forgiver.
