The 365 · Verses · Day 140 · Charity
Charity is not subtraction. It is investment at 700x.
Qur'an Quran 2:261
“Those who spend their wealth in God's cause are like grains of corn that produce seven ears, each bearing a hundred grains. God gives multiple increase to whoever He wishes: He is limitless and all knowing. (Abdel Haleem)”
Svenska: DE SOM ger av vad de äger för Guds sak kan liknas vid sädeskorn som ger sju ax och vart ax bär hundra korn. Gud mångdubblar avkastningen för den Han vill. (Knut Bernström)
The story
Ibn Kathīr connects this verse to the Prophetic hadith on the multiplication of good deeds: '...whoever does a good deed, it is multiplied for him by ten times to seven hundred times to many more times, by Allah's will.' (Bukhārī 6491, Muslim 130.) The 700-floor of Q 2:261 is itself further multipliable.
In the language
Fī sabīli-llāh (in Allah's path) is the qualifier: the multiplication is for charity given in Allah's path, not for any general spending. The Companions understood 'in Allah's path' to include jihad, daʿwah, masjid-building, supporting students of knowledge, providing for the poor, and any spending that supports the religion.
Why this verse
Q 2:261 establishes the structural multiplication-promise of charity in Allah's path: one grain becomes seven ears, each ear contains one hundred grains. Total: 1 grain : 700. The verse closes: Allah multiplies for whom He wills (which raises the cap above 700 to whatever Allah decrees). The verse is the structural foundation of the entire charity-economy of Islam: the believer who gives in Allah's path is not subtracting from his wealth; he is investing into a multiplier-system that has 700x as the structurally promised floor.
Bring it into today
Reframe charity from 'losing money' to 'investing at 700x'. The believer who internalizes this verse's economics finds charity-giving structurally easier; the dunya-economics frame is replaced with the akhirah-economics frame.
A reflection to carry
The verse is the structural foundation of charity-economics in Islam. The believer who gives in Allah's path invests at 700x as the named floor; Allah's multiplication beyond is unbounded. The dunya frame: spending = subtraction; the Quranic frame: spending = investment.
Read the longer reflection
The classical scholars (Ibn Kathīr, al-Qurṭubī, ar-Rāzī) all wrote at length on this verse as the structural Quranic charter of the charity-economy. The Companions internalized this: Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq gave all his wealth at one of the campaigns; ʿUmar gave half his wealth; ʿUthmān equipped the army of the Difficulty (jaysh al-ʿusrah). They were not careless; they were operating under the 700x-multiplier economics. The believer who reads this verse and continues to operate under dunya-subtraction logic has not yet absorbed the verse's structure.
