Qur'an Q 48:29

مُّحَمَّدٌ رَّسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥٓ أَشِدَّآءُ عَلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَآءُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ تَرَىٰهُمْ رُكَّعًا سُجَّدًا يَبْتَغُونَ فَضْلًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنًا ۖ سِيمَاهُمْ فِى وُجُوهِهِم مِّنْ أَثَرِ ٱلسُّجُودِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ مَثَلُهُمْ فِى ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ ۚ وَمَثَلُهُمْ فِى ٱلْإِنجِيلِ كَزَرْعٍ أَخْرَجَ شَطْـَٔهُۥ فَـَٔازَرَهُۥ فَٱسْتَغْلَظَ فَٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَىٰ سُوقِهِۦ يُعْجِبُ ٱلزُّرَّاعَ لِيَغِيظَ بِهِمُ ٱلْكُفَّارَ ۗ وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ مِنْهُم مَّغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًۢا

Muhammad is the Messenger of God. Those who follow him are harsh towards the disbelievers and compassionate towards each other. You see them kneeling and prostrating, seeking God's bounty and His good pleasure: on their faces they bear the marks of their prostrations... (Abdel Haleem)

The story

Ibn Kathir cites Q 5:54 as the structural twin: 'Allah will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers.' Ibn Kathir cites the Prophet's ﷺ hadiths on the brotherhood: 'The parable of the believers in their kindness and mercy for each other is that of one body: when one organ falls ill, the rest of the body responds with fever and sleeplessness.' (Bukhārī 6011, Muslim 2586.) The verse closes with the description of the believers' faces marked by prostration, their description in the Tawrah and Injīl as a seed that puts forth its shoot, becomes strong, and rises on its stem. Ibn Kathir cites the Christian observers of the Companions during the conquest of ash-Shām: 'These people are, by Allah, better than the Disciples (of ʿĪsā) according to what has been conveyed to us.'

In the language

أَشِدَّاءُ (ashidāʾ) is the plural of shadīd, severe, firm, unyielding. The qualifier ʿalā al-kuffār specifies the directionality: severity is against disbelievers in their disbelief, not against humans in general. رُحَمَاءُ (ruḥamāʾ) is the plural of raḥīm, merciful, compassionate. The qualifier baynahum specifies the directionality: mercy is among themselves, the believers. سِيمَاهُمْ (sīmāhum, 'their mark') is from s-w-m, the root of marking, sign, brand. The believers' faces carry the mark of their prostration.

Why this verse

Q 48:29 is Allah's structural praise of the Companions and, by extension, every believing community that follows their pattern. The verse names the dual posture: ashidāʾu ʿalā al-kuffār (severe against the disbelievers, in the context of military defense and refusal to compromise on creed) and ruḥamāʾu baynahum (merciful among themselves). The two are paired.

Bring it into today

Audit your conduct against the verse's two markers. Are you severe with fellow believers and accommodating toward disbelief, or the inverse? The verse is the diagnostic. The cure is the inversion. Test it for one week: be more merciful with the believer who annoys you; be more firm in declining the disbelief-pressure that compromises your creed.

A reflection to carry

The verse is the structural diagnostic for the believing community. The two markers (severity toward disbelief; mercy among believers) must coexist. Modern Muslim communities often invert the verse: harsh among themselves (sectarian fights, theological hostility, social cruelty toward fellow believers), accommodating toward disbelief (accepting the dunyā's standards on faith-questions, compromising on creed for social comfort). The inversion is structurally diagnosed by the verse.

Imam Mālik, citing this verse, said that those who hate the Companions are disbelievers, because the verse names the Companions as those who will enrage the disbelievers. The classical position: the Companions' character (severity toward disbelief, mercy among believers, sincere worship, faces marked by prostration) is the believer's standard. The structural achievement of the Companions: visible piety, internal mercy, external firmness, tangible work-output (the conquests, the codification of the Quran, the spreading of the faith). The Tawrah-and-Injīl description of the seed that puts forth its shoot is the agricultural metaphor: small beginnings, structural growth, eventually filling the field.
