The prophets said: what reason do we have not to rely on Allah? He has guided us. Let the trustworthy trust in Him.


Qur'an Q 14:11-12

قَالَتْ لَهُمْ رُسُلُهُمْ إِن نَّحْنُ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَمُنُّ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦ ۖ وَمَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نَّأْتِيَكُم بِسُلْطَـٰنٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

Their messengers answered, 'True, we are only men like you, but God favours whichever of His servants He chooses... why should we not put our trust in God when it is He who has guided us to this way we follow? We shall certainly bear steadfastly whatever harm you do to us. Let anyone who trusts, trust in God.' (Abdel Haleem)

The story

Ibn Kathir reads these verses as the archetypal declaration of the prophets. The disbelievers said: 'You are only human beings like us, so why should we follow you?' The prophets replied with the structural argument that has three layers: (1) yes, we are human like you; (2) Allah favors whom He wills with prophethood; (3) we cannot produce miracles on our own; only with Allah's permission. Then 14:12 deepens: 'And what reason do we have not to rely on Allah, when He has guided us to our paths?' The verses close with the structural seal: 'and on Allah let those who trust put their trust' (wa-ʿalā Allāhi fa-l-yatawakkal al-mutawakkilūn).

In the language

يَمُنُّ (yamunnu, 'He bestows favor') is from m-n-n, the root of grace and divine bestowal. وَمَا لَنَا أَلَّا نَتَوَكَّلَ (wa-mā lanā allā natawakkal, 'and what is it for us not to rely') is a rhetorical question with structural force: there is no possible reason not to rely. وَلَنَصْبِرَنَّ (wa-la-naṣbiranna, 'and we will surely bear with patience') uses the emphatic la- and the energetic nūn, structurally guaranteeing the patience. الْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ (al-mutawakkilūn) is the active participle: those characterized by the act of relying.

Why this verse

Q 14:11-12 is the archetypal declaration of the prophets to their disbelieving nations. The verses are the prophets' archetypal speech-act of tawakkul-with-courage. They face persecution; they declare reliance on Allah; they commit to patience under harm.

Bring it into today

When you face opposition this week (in any form), apply the prophets' five-part declaration: humility, gratitude, dependence, memory, resolve. Do this verbally where possible. The verses transmit a complete speech-template that has worked for prophets across generations.

A reflection to carry

The verses are the archetypal believer-speech-act. When facing opposition, the prophets said five things in sequence: (1) we are human like you (humility); (2) Allah chose us, not by our merit (gratitude); (3) we cannot produce miracles independently (dependence); (4) Allah guided us to our paths (memory of His grace); (5) we will bear patiently whatever harm you do (resolve). The five-part declaration is operational. Modern Muslims facing opposition can use the same five-part structure.

The verse 14:12's specific construction wa-mā lanā allā natawakkal is the prophets' rhetorical tour de force. They are challenged by their disbelieving nations; their response is not defensive but offensive: there is no possible reason not to rely on Allah. The specific reason given is structural: wa-qad hadānā subulanā (and He has guided us to our paths). The argument: when Allah has structurally guided you to the path you walk, the only reasonable response is reliance on the guide.
