Consult, then decide, then trust. If Allah helps, none can overcome. The Prophet ﷺ consulted the Companions before every major decision; you should too.


Qur'an Q 3:159-160

فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ ٱلْقَلْبِ لَٱنفَضُّوا۟ مِنْ حَوْلِكَ ۖ فَٱعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ ۖ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ

By an act of mercy from God, you [Prophet] were gentle in your dealings with them... Consult with them about matters, then, when you have decided on a course of action, put your trust in God: God loves those who put their trust in Him. If God helps you [believers], no one can overcome you; if He forsakes you, who else can help you? (Abdel Haleem)

The story

Ibn Kathir cites the operational examples: at Badr the Prophet ﷺ consulted on whether to engage the caravan; the Companions said: 'By Allah, we will not say to you what the Children of Israel said to Mūsā: Go you and your Lord, and fight you two; we are sitting right here. Rather, march forth, and we shall march forth with you.' At Uḥud he consulted on whether to fortify Madinah; the majority chose to go out, and he followed their advice. At Khandaq he consulted on the proposed peace-treaty. At Ḥudaybiyyah he consulted on whether to fight; Abū Bakr advised against, and the Prophet ﷺ followed. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The one whose advice is sought is in a position of trust (al-mustashār muʾataman).' (Abū Dāwūd 5128, Tirmidhī 2822, Ibn Mājah 3745.)

In the language

وَشَاوِرْهُمْ (wa-shāwirhum) is from sh-w-r, the root of consultation. فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ (fa-idhā ʿazamta, 'when you have firmly decided') is from ʿ-z-m, the root of resolve. The verb names a transition: from open consultation to closed decision. فَتَوَكَّلْ (fa-tawakkal) is from w-k-l, the root of entrusting one's affair to a guardian (wakīl). غَالِبَ (ghāliba, 'overcomer') is from gh-l-b, the root of dominance, victory, conquest.

Why this verse

Q 3:159-160 establishes the structural pairing of consultation (shūrā), decision, trust, and divine support. The verse pairs three elements: pardon and istighfār for the believers, consultation in matters, and tawakkul after the decision is made. The closing names the cosmic frame: with Allah's help, opposition is structurally void; without it, support is structurally inert.

For the next major decision in your life, follow the verse's three-step structure: (1) consult three to five wise people who know the relevant domain; (2) make istikhāra and decide firmly; (3) execute with tawakkul, refusing to second-guess after the decision is made.

A reflection to carry

The verse 3:159 is the structural cure for two opposite errors: arrogance (deciding without consultation, as if knowledge were complete) and indecision (consulting forever, as if trust could be replaced by analysis). The Quranic order is fixed: consult thoroughly, then decide firmly, then trust completely. The verse 3:160 then closes with the cosmic frame: in every endeavor, the operative variable is divine help. With it, opposition is structurally void; without it, support is structurally inert.

Ibn Kathir cites the foundational hadith of the consulted-one as a trustee: 'The one whose advice is sought is in a position of trust.' The Companions modeled this: when consulted, they gave their honest counsel even when it differed from the Prophet's ﷺ initial inclination. The verse 3:160's binary (Allah's help / Allah's abandonment) is structurally severe: it removes all middle states. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb famously said when sending an army: 'By Allah, your numbers do not concern me as much as your sins do. We do not have victory in numbers; we have it in righteousness.'
