The disease
الرِّيَاءُ فِي الصَّدَقَةِ
Riyāʾ fī al-Ṣadaqah
The story
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib used to drop food at the doors of widows and orphans in the night, never letting them see who delivered. When he died, those families discovered who had been feeding them and wept. His shade on the Day will include those nightly walks of secret ṣadaqah.
Why it's named first
Allah named the seven who will be shaded on the Day when there is no shade. Among them: 'a man who gave ṣadaqah so secretly that his left hand did not know what his right hand had given.' The disease is the opposite: the man whose right hand cannot give without his left hand (and his social circle) knowing. The Prophet ﷺ called secret ṣadaqah the highest. The verse Q 2:271 says: 'If you disclose your charities, it is good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you.'
In the Qur'an
إِن تُبْدُوا الصَّدَقَاتِ فَنِعِمَّا هِي ۖ وَإِن تُخْفُوهَا وَتُؤْتُوهَا الْفُقَرَاءَ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ (البقرة 271). 'If you disclose your charities, it is good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you.' (al-Baqarah 2:271)
In the Sunnah
«سَبْعَةٌ يُظِلُّهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي ظِلِّهِ يَوْمَ لَا ظِلَّ إِلَّا ظِلُّهُ... وَرَجُلٌ تَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ فَأَخْفَاهَا، حَتَّى لَا تَعْلَمَ شِمَالُهُ مَا تُنْفِقُ يَمِينُهُ». 'Seven Allah will shade in His shade on the Day there is no shade... a man who gave charity so secretly that his left hand did not know what his right hand had given.' (Bukhari 660, Muslim 1031)
The cure
Give in private. Give online without your name. Slip the cash into the box without anyone watching. Pay the relative's debt anonymously through a third party. When the impulse comes to post a picture of your charity, refuse it. The cure is the hidden gift.
What is at stake
Public charity is good (the verse confirms); riyāʾ-driven charity is not. The intention is decisive. The believer who gave for likes may find the Day's account different from what he expected.
A du'a for this day
'O Allah, accept my secret charities and keep them hidden from me too on the Day.'
The door of mercy
Al-Laṭīf (the Subtle), whose mercy reaches the believer through means he never sees.
A reflection to carry
Public charity is good; secret charity is better. The hadith names the right hand and the left as not knowing each other, the deepest privacy. Aim for that.

Modern giving has been transformed by visibility. The donation button is paired with the share button; the gift is paired with the announcement. The Sunnah pushes the believer toward an older model: the gift that nobody but Allah knows. The Prophet ﷺ's seven, on the Day, include the man whose right hand and left hand could not communicate. This is a literary intensification: privacy so deep that even your own body does not know. The disease of riyāʾ in ṣadaqah ruins the deed exactly as surely as bukhl prevents it. Both are denied by the same antidote: give for Allah, in secret if possible, in public only if it inspires others without inflating you. May Allah grant us ṣadaqah whose audience is Him alone, and may He shade us on the Day when shade is what we will most need.
