Ḥubb al-Māl al-Mutaṣarrim · The Crowding-Out Love

The disease

حُبُّ الْمَالِ الْمُتَصَرِّمُ

Ḥubb al-Māl al-Mutaṣarrim

The story

When Qārūn was reminded by his people to use his wealth in the way of Allah, he said: 'I have only been given it because of knowledge I possess' (28:78). His love had displaced Allah from his heart; the wealth had become his self-attribution. Allah caused the earth to swallow him and his treasures (28:81). The Money cluster's deepest disease is the displacement of the heart's first love.

Why it's named first

Allah named this disease in his own description of human nature: 'You love wealth with excessive love' (89:20). The disease is not loving wealth; the disease is the EXCESS. When wealth's love crowds out Allah's, the seat of the heart is taken. The Money cluster closes with this deepest disease: the displacement of love.

In the Qur'an

وَتُحِبُّونَ الْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمَّا (الفجر 20). 'And you love wealth with excessive love.' (al-Fajr 89:20)

In the Sunnah

«مَا ذِئْبَانِ جَائِعَانِ أُرْسِلَا فِي غَنَمٍ بِأَفْسَدَ لَهَا مِنْ حِرْصِ الْمَرْءِ عَلَى الْمَالِ وَالشَّرَفِ لِدِينِهِ». 'Two hungry wolves loose among sheep are not more destructive than a man's eagerness for wealth and status is to his religion.' (Tirmidhi 2376)

The cure

Diagnose the love yourself. Sit with the question: when you check your bank balance, what do you feel? When you contemplate Allah's mercy, what do you feel? If the second feels paler than the first, the love-balance is off. Restore by deliberate dhikr, deliberate ṣadaqah, deliberate spending on others. Each contradicts the disease.

What is at stake

When wealth's love displaces Allah's love, the believer makes wealth-shaped decisions about everything: marriage, friendships, time, sleep, prayer. The heart serves wealth even when the tongue says it serves Allah. The Day will reveal the seat of the heart.

A du'a for this day

«اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ حُبَّكَ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ نَفْسِي وَأَهْلِي وَمِنَ الْمَاءِ الْبَارِدِ». 'O Allah, make Your love more beloved to me than my own self, my family, and cold water.' (a frequent duʿāʾ from Dāwūd ﷺ)

The door of mercy

Al-Wadūd (the Loving One). Allah's love is the love the believer is asked to keep central. Wealth is allowed to be loved; it is not allowed to be central.

A reflection to carry

Love is the heart's central operation. Whatever sits there directs everything else. Allah asks for the throne. Wealth is welcome as a guest, never as the host.

Read the longer reflection

The Money cluster closes here, at the deepest possible diagnosis. Every previous disease (bukhl, akl al-haram, ghashsh, khiyānah, etc.) is downstream of one root: the heart's love has shifted from Allah to wealth. The Qārūn parable in Sūrah al-Qaṣaṣ makes this explicit: he had everything, but he had displaced Allah. His punishment was the earth swallowing him; his treasures could not save him. The believer's task is daily: keep the throne for Allah, let wealth serve, let it never reign. The verse 'wa tuḥibbūn al-māla ḥubban jammā' (89:20) is the Qur'an's diagnosis of the human heart. Without correction, the love grows. With correction, wealth becomes a tool again. May Allah seat Himself in our hearts as the most beloved, and may He demote everything else to its proper rank. With this, the Money cluster's ten arc of diseases and ten of tawbah closes. The Heart cluster opens next.

A verse, a healing, and a Sunnah, every morning.
