Tark Ṣalāt al-Jamāʿah · The Masjid the Men Forgot

The disease

ترك صلاة الجماعة

Tark Ṣalāt al-Jamāʿah

NeglectMajor Sin

The story

The blind companion Ibn Umm Maktūm asked the Prophet ﷺ if he could pray at home because he had no one to guide him to the masjid. The Prophet ﷺ asked: do you hear the call to prayer? He said: yes. The Prophet ﷺ said: then come. Even the blind, with no guide, were not exempted if they could hear the adhān (Muslim). Now look at sighted men with cars who hear the adhān through their phones and stay home.

Why it's named first

The Prophet ﷺ said: I would consider commanding the prayer to be established, then I would command a man to lead the people in prayer, and then I would take men with bundles of wood to people who do not attend the prayer, and burn their houses upon them (Bukhārī, Muslim). This is the most violent threat in the Sunnah outside of the punishments. He almost burned the houses of men who could attend but did not. Then we have men who have not seen the masjid in months and still call themselves believers.

In the Qur'an

And bow with those who bow (2:43). The verse uses the verb in PLURAL. Bowing alone was already commanded; bowing WITH the community is what this verse adds. The verse is in al-Baqarah at the very opening of the call to ṣalāh.

In the Sunnah

The Prophet ﷺ said: prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times better than prayer alone (Bukhārī, Muslim). He said: no three in a town or village where the prayer is not established in congregation except that Shayṭān takes them (Abū Dāwūd, ṣaḥīḥ). He said: the heaviest prayer on the hypocrites is ʿishāʾ and fajr; if they knew what was in them, they would come even if crawling (Bukhārī).

The cure

One fard prayer in the masjid this week, even if it is ʿishāʾ when it is easy. Then two next week. Then three. Build the muscle. The walk to the masjid is itself worship. Every step erases a sin and raises a degree (Muslim).

What is at stake

For men, abandoning jamāʿah without excuse is a sign of nifāq. ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd said: We used to consider that no one stayed away from prayer in congregation except a hypocrite known by his hypocrisy or someone sick (Muslim). The companions had a category for the man who skipped jamāʿah. They did not call him a tired believer; they called him known hypocrite.

A du'a for this day

When walking to the masjid: اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا وَفِي لِسَانِي نُورًا وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا وَفِي بَصَرِي نُورًا :: Allāhumma ijʿal fī qalbī nūran wa fī lisānī nūran wa fī samʿī nūran wa fī baṣarī nūran. O Allah, place light in my heart, in my tongue, in my hearing, and in my sight. (Bukhārī, Muslim)

The door of mercy

Pray the next fard in the masjid, no matter what your week looks like. The angel of return is at the door waiting for you.

A reflection to carry

Ibn Masʿūd narrates a hadith that should be a daily reminder for men. He said: I saw us, no one would stay back from prayer except a hypocrite known by his hypocrisy. A man would be brought leaning between two others until he was placed in the row (Muslim). Two others CARRYING him to the masjid because he was too sick to walk alone, and STILL coming. That is the standard. Now look at the standard we have settled into: I am tired, I am working, I will pray at home. Each of these excuses was unknown to the generation that took its religion directly from the Prophet ﷺ. Their absence was hypocrisy. Our presence is rare.

Read the longer reflection

Brothers, this one is for you specifically. The scholars are unanimous that women's prayer at home is better and more beloved to Allah for them; that is mercy. For men, the ruling is the opposite. The masjid is not optional. The Prophet ﷺ commanded; the salaf followed; the early ummah filled the masjids. Today the masjid in your neighborhood is half empty for fajr. Why? Because we have made worldly priorities, comfort, and tiredness into excuses. None of these excuses will be accepted on the Day. The bed will not testify for you. The job will not testify for you. The fatigue will not testify for you. Only the masjid will testify, either for or against. The Prophet ﷺ said: every prayer prayed in jamāʿah is a step erased and a degree raised (Muslim). Every step. Imagine the math after a year of attending fajr alone. Then imagine the math after a year of attending fajr in jamāʿah. The same prayer, fundamentally different return. Yā Allāh, return the men of our ummah to Your masjids before the call goes unanswered for generations. Make us of those who hear the adhān and answer it. Āmīn.
