The disease

الوَعْي بِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَة

Al-Waʿy bi-Yawm al-Qīyāmah

HeartSubtle

Why it's named first

Because Allah described the Day in dozens of vivid passages, none of them metaphorical. The believer who has internalized the Day lives differently. The sun close to the heads (Muslim 2864). The sweat reaching the heels, knees, waists, mouths by amount of sin (Muslim 2863). The scales bringing forward the smallest deed (Day 229's verse, al-Anbiyāʾ 21:47). The bridge over Hellfire (Sūrat al-Sāffāt). The cosmic darkness. The judging. The accounting. Allah, who is al-ʿAlīm bi-l-akhirah, painted these images deliberately so we would prepare. Awareness of the Day is the second station of the Akhirah-Awareness cluster. After remembering death (Day 236), we extend the gaze further: past the grave, to the Day.

In the Qur'an

'On that Day, mankind will issue forth in scattered groups to be shown their deeds' (al-Zalzalah 99:6). 'Whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it' (al-Zalzalah 99:7-8). 'For when the sky bursts open' (al-Inshiqāq 84:1). 'And the trumpet will be blown, so look, they will be rushing toward their Lord from their graves' (Yā Sīn 36:51). The Day-passages are abundant.

In the Sunnah

Muslim 2864: the sun close to heads. Muslim 2863: the sweat by amount of sin. Bukhārī 6532: the seventy thousand entering Jannah without account. Bukhārī 660: the seven categories under Allah's shade. The hadiths of the Day are vast; they are meant to be internalized.

The cure

Read the Day-related verses regularly. Practical: 1) Read Sūrat al-Qīyāmah (75), al-Wāqiʿah (56), al-Ḥāqqah (69), al-Takwīr (81), al-Infiṭār (82), al-Inshiqāq (84) on a weekly rotation; 2) Reflect on the scales of qisṭ (21:47, Day 229); reflect on the bridge of ṣirāṭ; reflect on the standing before Allah; 3) Pray with the niyyah that you may not have another salāh; 4) When tempted toward a sin, recall the Day specifically; let the imagination of standing before Allah for that act stop the act; 5) Visit a place where you can see the horizon; reflect on the heavens being rolled up as scrolls (21:104) and the cosmos transformed.

What is at stake

Without awareness of the Day, the believer floats. He acts without weighing the cosmic implications. He spends, speaks, looks, decides as if there will be no accounting. Allah named this state in al-Qīyāmah 75:5: 'bal yurīdu al-insānu li-yafjura amāmahu.' Rather, man wishes to transgress what is ahead of him. Awareness of the Day is the cure for the wish-to-transgress.

A du'a for this day

Allāhumma in-nī aʿūdhu bika min adhābi yawmi al-qīyāmah. Wa asʾaluka al-jannah wa mā yuqarribu ilayhā min qawl wa ʿamal. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection. And I ask You for Jannah and whatever brings me close to it of speech and action.)

A reflection to carry

Allah, in the late-Makkan surahs especially, painted the Day in vivid detail. The sun approaching the heads (within a mile). The sweat by amount of sin: to ankles, to knees, to waists, to mouths. The bridge over Hellfire, sharper than a blade. The scales bringing the smallest deed forward. The cosmos rolled up. The mountains turned to dust. Allah, al-Ḥakm, painted these images deliberately so we would internalize them and prepare. Ya akhī, ya ukhtī, read these surahs regularly: al-Qīyāmah, al-Wāqiʿah, al-Ḥāqqah, al-Takwīr, al-Infiṭār, al-Inshiqāq. Weekly rotation. Let the imagery embed in your soul. And when tempted toward a sin, summon the imagery: standing on the Day, sweat to your mouth, that deed presented in front of Allah and all of creation. The imagery is a structural deterrent. And the imagery of Jannah is a structural attractor: the rivers, the gardens, the companions, the meeting with Allah. Both are real. Both should shape your daily choices.

Read the longer reflection

Yā Rabb, You painted the Day in vivid detail across Your Quran. The sun close. The sweat by sin. The scales. The bridge. The cosmic transformation. The standing before You. The accounting. You painted these images so I would internalize them and adjust my dunya behavior. Ya Allāh, forgive me for the seasons I have lived without the Day's awareness. The decisions made without weighing the cosmic implications. The words said without imagining their presentation before You. The looks taken without the Day in view. The dirhams spent without the audit in mind. Each was a small floating-without-weighing. Repair me. Read me into the Day-surahs regularly. Build the imagery into my chest until it becomes the operating background of my decisions. And ya Rabb, do not let the awareness produce despair (Day 201's disease); let it produce ADJUSTMENT. The believer aware of the Day prepares; the believer in despair gives up. Make me the preparer. And on the Day, ya Allāh, when the sun is close and the sweat is real and the scales are weighed, place my deeds heavy and place me among those You shade under Your throne. The seven categories (Bukhārī 660). The seventy thousand without account (Bukhārī 6532). Place me among them. Āmīn ya Malīk Yawm al-Dīn.
