Khushūʿ in Ṣalāh
The disease

The story
ʿUmar said: 'I prepare my army during my prayer.' This is reported as self-criticism: even the ṣaḥābah recognized when khushūʿ was lacking. Ibn al-Qayyim devoted significant sections of Madārij as-Sālikīn to khushūʿ; al-Ghazālī gave an entire book of Iḥyāʾ to inner aspects of ṣalāh.
Why it's named first
Khushūʿ is the structural inner-quality of ṣalāh: heart's presence, limbs' stillness, eye's downcast gaze, mind's focused recollection. The Quran names khushūʿ as the first attribute of the successful believers (Q 23:1-2). The absence of khushūʿ does not invalidate the ṣalāh formally, but strips it of its operational fruit. The Prophet ﷺ: 'Many a one who prays gains nothing from his prayer except fatigue.' (Aḥmad, hasan.)
In the Qur'an
Q 23:1-2: 'Successful are the believers, those who in their prayer are humbly submissive (khāshiʿūn).' Q 2:45: 'Seek help in patience and prayer; indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive.' Cross-ref Q 29:45: 'Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing.'
In the Sunnah
Bukhārī 6502 (hadith qudsī): 'My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved than the obligatory acts I have enjoined upon him.' The drawing-near requires inner-quality of presence; obligatory ṣalāh performed mechanically does not produce drawing-near.
The cure
1. Before each ṣalāh: 30 seconds of stillness; remember death; recall standing before Allah. 2. Recite each portion (Fātiḥah, sec sura, dhikr) with awareness of meaning. 3. Slow down: the Prophet's ﷺ ṣalāh had visible pauses between movements. 4. Lower the gaze to the place of sajdah throughout standing. 5. Make duʿāʾ in sajdah explicitly for khushūʿ.
What is at stake
The believer without khushūʿ performs the form without the substance. The ṣalāh is technically valid but structurally hollow. Years of mechanical ṣalāh accumulate without producing the heart-changes the Quran promises (Q 29:45).
A du'a for this day
'Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min ʿilmin lā yanfaʿ wa-min qalbin lā yakhshaʿ wa-min nafsin lā tashbaʿ wa-min duʿāʾin lā yustajāb.' (Muslim 2722.)
The door of mercy
Khushūʿ is cultivable. Within forty days of conscious practice, the believer's ṣalāh begins to shift. The classical scholars considered the forty-day mark structurally significant.
