The disease
الْاسْتِغْفَار سَبْعِين مَرَّة
Al-Istighfār Sabʿīn Marrah
The story
Imam Aḥmad made istighfār continuously while walking. Imam ash-Shāfiʿī's last words were istighfār. The Prophet ﷺ taught the sayyid al-istighfār (Bukhārī 6306): whoever says it during the day with conviction and dies that day before evening will be among the people of Paradise; whoever says it at night and dies before morning will be among the people of Paradise.
Why it's named first
The Prophet ﷺ established a daily istighfār-pattern: 70 to 100 times daily, despite being maʿṣūm. The practice establishes the structural floor: if the Prophet ﷺ made istighfār 70-100x daily without sin, the believer with sins should match it. Each istighfār is an erasure-event; 70-100 erasures daily produces structural cleansing across years. The despair-cluster cannot persist in the heart that practices this.
In the Qur'an
Q 110:3: 'Glorify the praise of your Lord and ask His forgiveness: He is always ready to accept repentance.' The verse pairs istighfār with tasbīḥ-ḥamd; the closing affirms at-Tawwāb. Cross-ref Q 51:18: '...in the hours before dawn, they would seek forgiveness.'
In the Sunnah
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'By Allah, I seek Allah's forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day.' (Bukhārī 6307, Abū Hurayrah.) Cross-ref: 'Whoever holds fast to istighfār, Allah will provide a way out from every distress, relief from every difficulty, and provision from where he does not expect.' (Abū Dāwūd 1518, ḥasan.)
The cure
1. Establish a fixed istighfār-count daily. Start with 70; aim for 100. 2. Distribute: 25 after Fajr, 25 after Ẓuhr, 25 after ʿAṣr, 25 after Maghrib. 3. Add the sayyid al-istighfār once each morning and evening (Bukhārī 6306). 4. Make the istighfār with conviction.
What is at stake
The believer who does not practice regular istighfār allows sins to accumulate without erasure. The accumulated weight produces yaʾs, qunūṭ, tarakkuz ʿalā al-fashal. The cure must address sin-accumulation directly. Istighfār 70x daily is the structural treatment.
A du'a for this day
'Astaghfirullāh.' Expanded: 'Astaghfirullāha alladhī lā ilāha illā huwa al-Ḥayya al-Qayyūma wa atūbu ilayh.' And the sayyid al-istighfār (Bukhārī 6306).
The door of mercy
The practice scales: each daily 70-100 reps produces structural sin-erasure. Within months, the heart's relationship with sin shifts: accumulated weight reduced; sensitivity to new sin increased; reflex to istighfār becomes automatic.
A reflection to carry
Istighfār 70x daily: the Prophet's ﷺ established floor. He was maʿṣūm yet made istighfār 70-100 times daily; the believer with sins should match the Prophetic floor at minimum. Each istighfār is an erasure-event in the divine accounting.
Read the longer reflection
Imam Aḥmad made istighfār continuously while walking. Imam ash-Shāfiʿī's last words were istighfār. The classical scholars structured their day around it. Cross-ref Abū Dāwūd 1518: 'Whoever holds fast to istighfār, Allah will provide a way out from every distress, relief from every difficulty, and provision from where he does not expect.' The structural promise pairs istighfār with the makhraj-rizq mechanism (Q 65:2-3). The cure: install a daily istighfār-counter; distribute 70-100 reps across the day; recite with conviction, not mechanical mumbling.
