The Book of Visiting the Sick

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 164

Superiority of one who is Bereaved of his Infants

Few losses cut as deeply as the death of a child, and this chapter meets that grief with a promise of mercy. The Prophet (peace be upon him) teaches that the patience of a bereaved parent is not unseen by Allah, the parent who loses young children and bears it as a believer is given the children as a shield from the Fire and a doorway to Paradise.

Notice the tenderness running through these hadith, the reward flows from Allah's own mercy toward the little ones, the number softens from three to two when a grieving mother asks, and the Prophet makes a special gathering so women too can learn directly. The key word here is rahmah, mercy, the loss is real, but it is held inside something larger than itself.

Hadith 952

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Any Muslim who loses three children before they reach the age of maturity, will be granted Jannah by Allah, the Exalted, out of His Mercy for them." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

Any Muslim who loses three children before they reach maturity is promised Paradise by Allah, out of His mercy toward those little ones.

Hadith 953

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "A Muslim whose three children die (in infancy) will not be touched by the Fire (of Hell) except for the fulfillment of Allah's Oath." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. [Allah's Oath here refers to His Ayah: "There is not one of you but will cross over it (Hell)." (:) And the crossing will be across the 'Bridge' set over the Hell.]

In plain words

A Muslim whose three young children die will be shielded from the Fire, except for the unavoidable crossing that Allah has decreed for everyone.

Hadith 954

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Only men benefit from your talks, so please fix a day for us, to teach us the knowledge which Allah has taught you." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fixed a day and directed them to assemble. When they gathered, the Prophet (ﷺ) went to them and taught them what Allah had taught him. He (ﷺ) then said, "Any woman of you whose three children die (in infancy) they will be a guard for her against Fire (of Hell)." One of the women asked: "What if she loses two?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied, "Even two." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

When women asked the Prophet for their own time to learn, he taught them that a woman whose three children die in infancy will be guarded from the Fire, and when asked, he said even two would suffice.
