The Book of Visiting the Sick

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 160

Admonition beside the Grave

A graveside is a place where the heart softens, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) used such moments to teach. The Arabic title speaks of al-maw'izah, sincere admonition, the kind of reminder that lands when death is close at hand. Here the lesson is about al-qadar, divine decree, and how it should move us toward action rather than away from it.

Notice the balance the chapter holds. Yes, every soul's destination is already written, yet we are told to keep working, because the deeds that lead a person to their end are made easy for them. Knowing our place is decreed is not an excuse to sit still; it is an invitation to keep striving and to read our own effort as a sign of where we are headed.

Hadith 945

`Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

We were accompanying a funeral procession in Baqi` Al-Gharqad (graveyard in Al-Madinah) when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) proceeded towards us and sat down. We sat around him. He had a small stick in his hand. He was bending down his head and scraping the ground with the stick. He said, "There is none among you but has a place assigned for him either in the Jannah or in the Hell." The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah, should we not depend upon what has been written for us (and give up doing good deeds)?'' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Carry on doing good deeds. Every one will find it easy to do such deeds (as will lead him to his destined place) for which he has been created." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

At a graveside the Prophet taught that everyone's place in Paradise or Hell is already known to Allah, yet when asked if they should stop striving he said to keep doing good, for each person is made able to do the deeds that lead to their destined place.
