The Book of Visiting the Sick

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 154

Prohibition of Disclosing the Physical defects of the Deceased

This brief chapter guards the dignity of the dead. The one who washes a body sees it in its most vulnerable state, and Islam ties a great reward to guarding that privacy. The lesson reaches beyond the washing of bodies to a whole ethic of covering faults rather than exposing them.

Hadith 928

Abu Rafi` Aslam (May Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He who washes a dead body and conceals what he notices of physical defects, he will be forgiven forty times.'' [Al-Hakim].

In plain words

Whoever washes a dead body and keeps private any flaws they notice on it is promised great forgiveness, a reward for guarding the dignity of the deceased.
