The Book of Greetings

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 135

The Excellence of Greeting Upon Entering the House

The final chapter in this set brings the greeting home, literally. The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised that you give salam to your own family when you walk through your door, and he promised it would be a blessing for you and for them. The household, the place where manners are most easily dropped, is exactly where this courtesy is to be kept alive.

This guidance reflects the Qur'anic command to greet with peace when entering houses, 'a greeting from Allah, blessed and good.' Notice the word blessing: the salam is presented not as mere politeness but as something that draws goodness into the home.

Hadith 861

Anas bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me, "Dear son, when you enter your house, say As- Salamu 'Alaikum to your family, for it will be a blessing both to you and to your family." [At-Tirmidhi, who classified it as Hasan Sahih].

In plain words

The Prophet advised greeting your family with salam when you enter your home, promising it as a blessing for you and for them. It keeps courtesy and peace alive right at home.
