The Book of Dress

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 121

The Excellence of Adopting Moderation in Dress

Sitting beside the call to humility is its balancing partner: moderation. This brief chapter teaches that neglecting your appearance without need is no virtue. Allah, the source of every blessing, loves to see the trace of His gifts on the one He has favoured.

Read together with the chapters around it, the lesson is a middle path: neither flaunting wealth out of pride nor pretending poverty out of false piety, but wearing Allah's bounties with gratitude and good care.

Hadith 802

`Amr bin Shu`aib on the authority of his father and grandfather reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Allah loves to see the sign of His Bounties on his slave." [At-Tirmidhi].

In plain words

Allah loves to see the trace of His blessings on the one He has favored. Caring for your appearance with gratitude, neither flaunting wealth nor neglecting yourself without reason.
