The Book of Dress

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 118

The Excellence of the Qamees

باب استحباب القميص

A single hadith carries this chapter, and it speaks volumes through a small detail. Among all garments, the Prophet (peace be upon him) loved the qamees the most, a modest full-length shirt close to today's thawb. The qamees covers the body well and is comfortable and unfussy, which is exactly why it was dear to him.

Buruja sees in this a quiet standard for dress: choose what is modest, practical, and dignified over what merely flatters. Knowing what the Prophet (peace be upon him) personally preferred is itself a way of drawing closer to his example in the ordinary corners of life.

Hadith 788

Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:

عن أم سلمة رضى الله عنها قالت‏:‏ كان أحب الثياب إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم القميص‏.‏((رواه أبو داود والترمذي))

Out of all garments, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) liked the Qamees the best. [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi ]. Editor's note: The Qamees is a modest, traditional outfit thought to resemble what is now referred to as a thawb.

In plain words

Of all garments, he liked the qamees best, a modest full-length shirt close to today's thawb. A quiet pointer toward dress that is modest, comfortable, and dignified.
