The Book About the Etiquette of Eating

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 115

Excellence of the Cupbearer Drinking Last

باب استحباب كون ساقي القوم آخرهم شرباً

This short chapter lifts a small act of serving into a lesson in character. When you pour water for others, the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught, you take your own drink last. The Arabic term saqi, the one who gives drink, names a role of quiet honour, and the etiquette around it is really an etiquette of the heart.

Notice how service here is not about losing out but about putting others first by choice. The cupbearer who drinks last is not deprived; he is the most generous person in the gathering, and Buruja reads this as a tiny daily rehearsal of preferring others over oneself.

Hadith 772

Abu Qatadah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

عن أبى قتادة رضى الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ ‏ "‏ ساقي القوم آخرهم شرباً‏" ‏. ((رواه الترمذي))

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "He who serves others with drinking water should be the last to drink himself." [At-Tirmidhi].

In plain words

The one who pours water for a gathering should drink last himself. Serving others by putting their share before your own.
