Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 113

Undesirability of Blowing into the Vessel while Drinking

Closely tied to the manners of drinking is a small caution: do not blow or breathe into the cup. This chapter pairs that guidance with a practical question, what to do when something floats on the water's surface, and the Prophet's answer is calm and workable.

Rather than blow the litter aside, pour it out, and rather than gulp without pausing, lift the cup away and breathe between sips. The thread running through is cleanliness joined to ease, a faith that refines habits without burdening the believer.

Hadith 764

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited us blowing in the drinking water. A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Sometimes I see some litter floating about on the surface. What should I do then?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Pour them out." Then the man said: "My thirst is not quenched with one draught." Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Then put away the cup from your mouth (in between three gulps), and take breath." [At-Tirmidhi].

In plain words

He forbade blowing into the drinking water. When asked about floating bits, he said to pour them out, and to lift the cup away and breathe between sips rather than gulp. Cleanliness made easy.

Hadith 765

Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited us from breathing into the drinking vessel or blowing in it. [At-Tirmidhi].

In plain words

He told them not to breathe or blow into the drinking vessel. Breathe outside the cup to keep the water clean and pleasant.
