The Book of Supplicating Allah to Exalt the Mention of Allah's Messenger

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 243

The Obligation of Supplicating Allah to Exalt His Mention and its Excellence, and its Manner

This chapter gathers the hadith on sending salat upon the Prophet, asking Allah to exalt his mention and bless him. The Arabic phrase is the salah 'ala an-Nabi, and the chapter shows it is both a command and a privilege, with its own etiquette and taught wordings. The central promise is one of reciprocity: ask Allah to honor him, and Allah honors you in return.

Notice how the hadith move from why we do it to how. First the rewards and warnings (nearness to him, blessings returned tenfold, and a rebuke for the one who hears his name and stays silent), then the precise forms the Companions were taught when they asked exactly how to send blessings. Read these as an invitation to keep the Prophet's mention alive on the tongue, especially on Fridays and after prayer.

Hadith 1397

'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: "Whoever supplicates Allah to exalt my mention, Allah will exalt his mention ten times." [Muslim].

In plain words

Whoever asks Allah to honor the Prophet, Allah honors that person ten times over. Sending blessings on him returns to you many times multiplied.

Hadith 1398

Ibn Mas'ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "The people who will be nearest to me on the Day of Resurrection will be those who supplicate Allah more often for me." [At-Tirmidhi].

In plain words

The closest people to the Prophet on the Day of Resurrection are those who asked Allah to bless him most often. Frequent blessings on him draw you nearer to him.

Hadith 1399

Aus bin Aus (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Among the best of your days is Friday; so supplicate Allah more often for me in it, for your supplications will be displayed to me." He was asked: "O Messenger of Allah! How will our blessings be displayed to you when your decayed body will have mixed with the earth?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Allah has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of the Prophets." [Abu Dawud].

In plain words

Friday is among the best days, so send abundant blessings on the Prophet then, as they are presented to him. It encourages making this a regular Friday habit.

Hadith 1400

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "May his nose soil with dust in whose presence mention is made of me and he does not supplicate for me." [At-Tirmidhi].

In plain words

A strong rebuke is voiced for the person who hears the Prophet mentioned yet does not ask Allah to bless him. When you hear his name, respond with blessings.

Hadith 1401

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Do not make my grave a place of festivity, and supplicate Allah for me, for your supplication reaches me wherever you are." [Abu Dawud].

In plain words

He asks that we send blessings upon him wherever we are, since our greetings reach him, rather than treating his grave as a place of recurring gatherings. Connection to him is through supplication, not location.

Hadith 1402

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Whenever someone greets me, Allah returns the soul to my body (in the grave) and I return his greeting." [Abu Dawud].

In plain words

Whenever someone greets the Prophet, he is enabled to return that greeting. Your salam upon him does not go unanswered.

Hadith 1403

'Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned but he does not supplicate for me." [At- Tirmidhi].

In plain words

The truly stingy person, he says, is the one who hears him mentioned but withholds blessings upon him. Generosity here costs nothing but a few words.

Hadith 1404

Fadalah bin 'Ubaid (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) heard some one supplicating after his prayer without praising Allah and without supplicating Allah for the Prophet (ﷺ). With regard to him, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "This man rushed." Then he called him and said, "When any one of you have performed Salat (prayer) and wants to supplicate, let him praise Allah first then glorify Him in the beginning and then he should supplicate Allah for me. Then he may supplicate for whatever he likes." [Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi].

In plain words

He gently corrected someone who supplicated after prayer without first praising Allah and sending blessings on the Prophet. The taught order is: praise Allah, send blessings on the Prophet, then ask for what you wish.

Hadith 1405

Abu Muhammad Ka'b bin 'Ujrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) came to us and we asked him, "O Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you (i.e., say As-salamu 'alaikum), but how should we supplicate for you?" He (ﷺ) said, "Say: 'Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin, wa 'ala 'ali Muhammadin, kama sallaita 'ala 'ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin, wa 'ala 'ali Muhammadin, kama barakta 'ala 'ali Ibrahima, innaka Hamidum Majid [O Allah, exalt the mention of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as you exalted the family of Ibrahim. You are Praised and Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are Praised and Glorious."' [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

The Companions knew how to greet the Prophet but asked how to send blessings on him. He taught them the words of the salah that link him and his family to the blessing on Ibrahim and his family.

Hadith 1406

Abu Mas'ud Al-Badri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

We were sitting in the company of Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (May Allah be pleased with him), when the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to us. Bashir bin Sa'd said: "O Messenger of Allah! Allah has commanded us to supplicate for you, but how should we do that?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) kept silent. We were much perturbed over his silence and we wished he did not asked him this question. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Say: 'O Allah, exalt the mention of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as you exalted the family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are the Praised, the Glorified,' and the method of greeting (i.e., Salam) is as you know." [Muslim].

In plain words

Asked how to send blessings on the Prophet, he taught the wording asking Allah to honor and bless Muhammad and his family as He did the family of Ibrahim. It gives the believer the exact form to use.

Hadith 1407

Abu Humaid As-Sa'idi (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "O Messenger of Allah! How should we supplicate for you?" Your Salat (O Allah, exalt the mention of Muhammad and his wives and offspring as You exalted the mention of the family of Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad and the wives and the offspring of Muhammad as you blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are the Praised, the Glorious'." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

When the Companions asked how to send blessings on him, he gave a wording that included his wives and offspring, again tied to the blessing on the family of Ibrahim. Another taught form of sending salah on the Prophet.
