The Excellence of Worship in the time of Tribulations

باب فضل العبادة في الهرج وهو الاختلاط والفتن ونحوها

Some seasons of life are full of confusion, unrest, and turmoil, what the Arabic calls al-harj: a time when truth and falsehood blur and people are swept along by events. This brief chapter carries a single luminous promise about exactly such times.

When chaos scatters the crowd, the believer who simply holds fast to worship is doing something rare and beloved to Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) compares its reward to migrating to him, a reminder that steadiness in devotion when others are lost is among the most precious acts of all.

Hadith 1366

Ma'qil bin Yasar (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

عن معقل بن يسار رضي الله عنه قال‏:‏ قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏:‏ ‏ "‏العبادة في الهرج كهجرة إلي‏" ‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه مسلم‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The reward of worship performed at a time of trials is equal in reward to an emigration to me." [Muslim].

In plain words

Worship held to during times of turmoil and confusion is rewarded like emigrating to the Prophet (peace be upon him). Staying steady in devotion when others are swept away is especially beloved to Allah.
