The Book of Hajj

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 233

The Obligation of Hajj (Pilgrimage) and its Excellence

This chapter is about Hajj, the pilgrimage to the House of Allah, its standing in Islam and its great reward. It opens by naming Hajj among the foundations of the faith and gathers reports on its blessings and how it is to be approached.

Across these hadith you will see two threads. One is the cleansing power of a sincere, accepted pilgrimage, which can return a person free of sin and is rewarded with Paradise. The other is mercy and ease: performing Hajj for a parent who cannot, the worth of a child's pilgrimage, and gentle guidance not to overburden ourselves with questions.

Hadith 1271

Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:

وعن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال‏:‏ بني الإسلام على خمس‏:‏ شهادة أن لا إله إلى الله وأن محمدًا رسول الله، وإقام الصلاة، وإيتاء الزكاة، وحج البيت، وصوم رمضان‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "(The superstructure of) Islam is based on five (pillars), testifying the fact that La ilaha illallah wa anna Muhammad-ar-Rasul-ullah [there is no true god except Allah, and Muhammad ((ﷺ)) is the Messenger of Allah], establishing As- Salat (the prayers), paying Zakat (poor due), the pilgrimage to the House [of Allah (Ka'bah)], and the Saum (fasting) during the month of Ramadan." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

This names the five foundations of Islam: bearing witness to Allah and His Messenger, prayer, Zakat, Hajj, and fasting Ramadan. Hajj is listed here as one of these core pillars.

Hadith 1272

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) delivered a Khutbah and said, "O people! Hajj (pilgrimage to the House of Allah) has been made incumbent upon you, so perform Hajj." A man inquired: "O Messenger of Allah, is it prescribed every year?" He (ﷺ) remained silent till the man repeated it thrice. Then he (ﷺ) said, "Had I replied in the affirmative, it would have surely become obligatory, and you would not have been able to fulfill it." Afterwards he said, "Do not ask me so long as I do not impose anything upon you, because those who were before you were destroyed on account of their frequent questioning and their disagreement with their Prophets. So when I order you to do something, do it as far as you can; and when I forbid you from doing anything, eschew it." [Muslim].

In plain words

The Prophet taught Hajj is required, then warned against excessive questioning that could make matters harder. The lesson is to do what we are commanded as best we can and avoid what we are forbidden, without burdening ourselves.

Hadith 1273

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked: "Which deed is the best?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Faith in Allah and His Messenger." Then he was asked: "What is next?" He replied, "Jihad (holy fighting) in the Cause of Allah." Then he was asked, "What is after that?" He (ﷺ) replied, "Hajj Mabrur (an accepted pilgrimage)." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

Asked for the best deeds, the Prophet named faith in Allah and His Messenger first, then striving in His cause, then an accepted Hajj. It places a sincere pilgrimage among the highest of actions.

Hadith 1274

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

وعنه قال سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول‏:‏ ‏ "‏من حج، فلم يرفث ولم يفسق، رجع كيوم ولدته أمه‏" ‏ ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Whoever performs Hajj (pilgrimage) and does not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commits sin, nor disputes unjustly (during Hajj), then he returns from Hajj as pure and free from sins as on the day on which his mother gave birth to him." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

Whoever performs Hajj while avoiding sin and quarreling returns as free of sins as a newborn. It shows the deep spiritual cleansing a sincere pilgrimage can bring.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "(The performance of) 'Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous 'Umrah; and the reward of Hajj Mabrur (i.e., one accepted) is nothing but Jannah." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

Umrah wipes away the sins between it and the one before, and an accepted Hajj earns nothing less than Paradise. It highlights the great reward set aside for these acts of worship.

I said: "O Messenger of Allah! We consider Jihad as the best deed, should we not then go for Jihad?" The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The best Jihad for you women is Hajj Mabrur (i.e., one accepted by Allah)." [Al-Bukhari].

In plain words

When Aishah asked about fighting in Allah's cause, the Prophet said the best such striving for women is an accepted Hajj. It honors the pilgrimage as a path of great reward open to them.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "There is no day on which Allah sets free more slaves from Hell than He does on the Day of 'Arafah." [Muslim].

In plain words

The Prophet said no day sees Allah free more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. It marks this day of Hajj as a time of immense mercy and forgiveness.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "(The performance of) 'Umrah during Ramadan is equal to Hajj (pilgrimage)." Or said, "Equal to the performance of Hajj with me." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

The Prophet said performing Umrah during Ramadan equals a Hajj, or a Hajj done with him. It shows the special worth of Umrah in that blessed month.

In plain words

A woman asked if she could perform the obligatory Hajj for her elderly father who could not travel, and the Prophet said yes. It shows a child may fulfill this duty on behalf of a parent unable to do it.

In plain words

A man whose father was too old and weak for Hajj or Umrah was told by the Prophet to perform both on his behalf. It confirms that pilgrimage can be carried out for a parent who cannot manage it.

The Prophet (ﷺ) came across a caravan at Ar-Rauha' and asked who the people in the caravan were. They replied that they were Muslims. They asked: "Who are you?" He (ﷺ) said, "I am the Messenger of Allah." Then a woman lifted up a boy to him and asked: "Would this child be credited with having performed the Hajj (pilgrimage)?" Whereupon he (ﷺ) said, "Yes, and you will have a reward." [Muslim].

In plain words

When a woman lifted up a child and asked if his Hajj would count, the Prophet said yes and that she too would be rewarded. It shows even a child's pilgrimage holds worth, and the caring adult is rewarded as well.

Ukaz, Mijannah and Dhul-Majaz were markets during the pre-Islamic period. The Companions disliked trading there till the following Ayat of the Noble Qur'an were revealed: "There is no sin on you if you seek the Bounty of your Rubb (during pilgrimage by trading)..." (:198) [Al- Bukhari].

In plain words

Companions had felt uneasy about trading at certain markets during pilgrimage, until a verse made clear there is no sin in seeking lawful livelihood then. It eased their worry about honest trade during Hajj.
