The Book of Good Manners

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 92

Dignity and Tranquility

باب الوقار والسكينة

This brief chapter draws out a quiet quality of the Prophet's character captured in its title, al-waqar wa as-sakinah, dignity and tranquility. It is the calm, composed bearing of someone whose heart is settled, neither loud and excessive nor stiff and cold.

The single hadith here paints that balance in one stroke: a man whose warmth showed as a smile rather than uncontrolled laughter. Notice that gravitas and gentleness are not opposites, and that a measured demeanour is itself part of beautiful character.

Hadith 702

'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

عن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت‏:‏ ما رأيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مستجمعا قط ضاحكاً حتى ترى منه لهواته، إنما كان يتبسم ‏.‏ ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏)‏‏)‏ ‏.‏

I have never seen Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) laughing so heartily that his uvula could be seen. He used to smile only. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

The Prophet was never seen laughing so hard that the back of his throat showed; he would only smile. His warmth came through in a calm, dignified way.
