The Book of Good Manners

Riyad as-Salihin · Chapter 90

Listening Attentively

The final chapter in this set turns from speaking to listening. Its theme is the courtesy of giving full attention to the one addressing you, and especially of falling silent so a teacher or reminder can be heard.

The single report sets the scene at the Farewell Pilgrimage, where the people are asked to be silent before a grave warning is delivered. Notice the pairing: attentive silence is what allows weighty guidance to be received and held.

Hadith 697

Jarir bin 'Abdullah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) asked me on the occasion of the Farewell Pilgrimage to tell the people to keep silent, then he (ﷺ) said, "Do not revert to disbelief after me, chopping the heads of one another." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

In plain words

At the Farewell Pilgrimage the Prophet had the people quieted, then warned them not to fall back into disbelief after him by turning violently against one another. Unity and avoiding bloodshed were a parting concern.
