Allah has angels who travel the earth doing nothing but searching for the gatherings where He is remembered. When they find one, they call to each other, 'come, here is what you are looking for,' and they surround the gathering with their wings up to the sky. Then Allah asks them, though He knows best, what His servants are saying and seeking, and forgives them all, and the angels say: among them was one who only passed by and sat. And Allah says: them too, for the one who sits with them is not made wretched.
Where this hadith comes from
This is a hadith qudsi, a sacred saying in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) reports the very words of Allah, words outside the Qur'an. Here he describes a scene in the unseen: roving angels who do nothing but search the earth for gatherings of remembrance, and the conversation that follows between Allah and those angels.
It is narrated by Abu Hurayrah (ra) and recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim, so it is sahih and agreed upon, of the very highest authenticity. It speaks to creed and to the purification of the heart: who Allah is in His mercy, and what it means to keep company where He is remembered.
The key words
What it means, line by line
Allah has angels who travel the earth seeking out the gatherings of dhikr (yatatabba'una majalis adh-dhikr). When they find a circle remembering Allah they sit with the people and fold their wings over one another, filling the space between the gathering and the lowest heaven, then they rise back up. Allah, who knows best, asks them where they have come from, and they answer: from servants of Yours who were glorifying You, magnifying You, declaring Your oneness, praising You, and asking of You.
The angels relate that the servants ask Allah for Paradise and seek His protection from the Fire (yastajirunaka, from the matn's wa-yastajirunaka, asking sanctuary), though they have seen neither, and that they seek His forgiveness (yastaghfirunaka). Allah answers: I have forgiven them, given them what they asked, and granted them refuge. Then comes the tender turn: among them, Lord, was a much-sinning servant (khatta') who was only passing by and sat down. Allah says, And to him too I have forgiven; they are a people whose companion is not made wretched. The verse below is the standing command behind the whole scene.
Mercy descends on the gathering
The image is overwhelming: angels combing the world for circles of remembrance, then ringing them with wings stretched to heaven, while Allah Himself attends to what is said and forgives everyone present. Remembrance of Allah in company draws down a canopy of mercy. The believer who seeks out such gatherings is placing himself exactly where forgiveness is falling.
Even the one who just sat down
The most tender detail is the passerby, the one who did not even come for the dhikr but simply sat among them for some other reason. The angels point him out, and Allah forgives him too: they are a people with whom no one who sits is made wretched. This is the power of good company. Just being near the remembrance of Allah pulls you into its mercy. Choose your gatherings well; sit where Allah is mentioned, and let the company carry you.

A du'a to carry
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured. (Ar-Ra'd 13:28)
A du'a for good company
While the world chases its business, angels are quietly searching it for one thing: a group of people remembering Allah, so they can surround them with mercy. Make sure you are sometimes found among them.
O Allah, place us in the gatherings where You are remembered, and let Your mercy that surrounds them surround us. Make our hearts find their rest in Your remembrance. Ameen.
