Salawat
الصلاة على النبيBlessings upon the Prophet ﷺ
The fullest place for the salawat is in the sitting of the prayer, after the tashahhud and before the salam, and you can say it any time, as often as you like. Friday especially is a day to increase it.
Two authentic wordings are given here. They are nearly the same; the Prophet ﷺ taught both. Pick the one you know and say it with love, picturing the man you are blessing.

The full salawat (Ibrahimiyyah)
Allāhumma ṣalli `alā Muḥammadinwa `alā ’āli Muḥammadin, kamā ṣallayta `alā 'Ibrāhīma wa `alā ’āli 'Ibrāhīma, 'innaka ḥamīdum-majīd. Allāhumma bārik `alā Muḥammadin wa `alā ’āli Muḥammadin, kamā bārakta `alā 'Ibrāhīma wa `alā 'āli 'Ibrāhīma, 'innaka ḥamīdum-majīd.
O Allah, bestow Your favor on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have bestowed Your favor on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.
sahihSahih al-Bukhari (Fath al-Bari 6/408)This is the salawat the Prophet ﷺ taught when the Companions asked how to send blessings on him. It is what you recite in every prayer, in the sitting before the salam.

A second narration of the salawat
Allāhumma ṣalli `alā Muḥammadin wa `alā 'azwājihi wa dhurriyyatihi, kamā ṣallayta `alā 'āli 'Ibrāhīma. Wa bārik `alā Muḥammadin wa `alā 'azwājihi wa dhurriyyatihi, kamā bārakta `alā 'āli 'Ibrāhīma. 'Innaka ḥamīdum-majīd.
O Allah, bestow Your favor on Muhammad and upon his wives and progeny as You have bestowed Your favor upon the family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad and his wives and progeny as You have blessed the family of Ibrahim, You are full of praise, Most Glorious.
sahihSahih al-Bukhari (Fath al-Bari 6/408)A slightly different wording of the same blessing, naming his wives and offspring. Both are authentic; you may use either.
Why we keep sending it
There is no du'a like the salawat, because it is the one prayer guaranteed to be accepted: it is a request for Allah to honour the one He already loves most. And every time it leaves your lips it comes back multiplied, an angel carrying your name to him.
O Allah, send Your blessings and peace upon Muhammad ﷺ as You blessed Ibrahim, and let our tongues never tire of his name.
Questions
- What is the salawat?
- It is the blessing on the Prophet ﷺ that he himself taught: 'Allahumma salli ala Muhammad wa ala ali Muhammad...' (O Allah, bestow Your favour on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You did on Ibrahim...). It is recited in every prayer and may be said any time.
- When do you say the salawat in prayer?
- In the final sitting, after the tashahhud and before the closing salam. It is part of every prayer.
- What is the reward of sending salawat?
- The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever sends one blessing upon him, Allah sends ten blessings upon them in return. Increasing it, especially on Fridays, is among the most rewarding and beloved acts.
