After Salah

The dhikr that follows every prayer

Say these after the salam of each obligatory prayer, before you stand and scatter into the day. A few are kept for after Fajr and Maghrib in particular (the ten declarations and the three Quls); the rest follow every fardh.

Take the tasbih slowly: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, thirty-three each, then sealing the hundred with the declaration of oneness. The Prophet ﷺ said the one who keeps this after every prayer has their sins forgiven though they be like the foam of the sea.

  1. 1

    Forgiveness, then peace

    3x

    Astaghfirullāh

I seek the forgiveness of Allah (three times). O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Owner of majesty and honor.

    sahihMuslim 1/414
  2. 2

There is no god but Allah, alone

Lā 'ilāha 'illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu ‘l-mulku wa lahu ‘l-ḥamd, wa huwa `alā kulli shay'in qadīr, Allāhumma lā māni`a limā 'a`tayt, wa lā mu`tiya limā mana`t, wa lā yanfa`u dhal-jaddi minkal-jadd.

None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is Able to do all things. O Allah, there is none who can withhold what You give, and none may give what You have withheld, and the might of the mighty person cannot benefit him against You.

    sahihAl-Bukhari 1/255, Muslim 1/414
  3. 3

    No power except in Him

None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and His is the praise and He is Able to do all things. There is no power and no might except by Allah. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and we do not worship any other besides Him. His is grace, and His is bounty, and to Him belongs the most excellent praise. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. (We are) sincere in making our religious devotion to Him, even though the disbelievers may dislike it.

    sahihMuslim 1/415
  4. 4

    The tasbih of thirty-three

    3x

    Subḥānallāh, walḥamdu lillāh, wallāhu 'akbar,

Glory is to Allah, and praise is to Allah, and Allah is the Most Great. (each said thirty-three times) None has the right to be worshiped but Allah alone, He has no partner, His is the dominion and His is the praise and He is Able to do all things.

sahihMuslim 1/418, Whoever says this after every prayer will be forgiven his sins even though they be as the foam of the sea

SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, thirty-three each, then La ilaha illallah to complete the hundred. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever does this after every prayer is forgiven though his sins be like the foam of the sea.

  5. 5

    The three Quls

    3x after Fajr & Maghrib

Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent." / Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak From the evil of that which He created And from the evil of darkness when it settles And from the evil of the blowers in knots And from the evil of an envier when he envies." / Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The Sovereign of mankind, The God of mankind, From the evil of the retreating whisperer - Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind - From among the jinn and mankind."

    Qur'anAl-Ikhlas 112, Al-Falaq 113, An-Nas 114

Recited after every prayer, and three times each after Fajr and Maghrib.

  6. 6

    Ayat al-Kursi

    1x

Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

    Qur'anAl-Baqarah 2:255

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing stands between him and entering Paradise except death.

  7. 7

Ten declarations after Fajr and Maghrib

Lā ilāha illallāh waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu‘l-mulku wa lahu‘l-ḥamd yuḥyī wa yumīt wa huwa `alā kulli shay'in qadīr.

None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, Who has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He brings life and He causes death, and He is Able to do all things.

    At-Tirmidhi 5/515, Ahmad 4/227
  8. 8

Asking for beneficial knowledge (after Fajr)

Allāhumma innī as'aluka `ilman nāfi`an, wa rizqan ṭayyiban, wa `amalam-mutaqabbala.

"O Allah, I ask You for knowledge which is beneficial, and sustenance which is good, and deeds which are acceptable."

    sahihIbn Majah 1/152 and Majma' Az-Zawa'id 10/111

Why we linger

The prayer is the meeting; the adhkar after it are the few moments you do not rush away. The angels are still listening, the heart is still turned. To sit and remember Him here is to let the prayer keep working in you after the salam.

O Allah, You are Peace and from You comes peace. Let us not pray and then forget You until the next prayer, but carry the remembrance of the salam out into the whole day.

Questions

What do you say after the obligatory prayer?
Begin with istighfar three times and 'Allahumma antas-salam wa minkas-salam...', then the declaration of Allah's oneness, the tasbih (SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar thirty-three each, sealed with La ilaha illallah), and Ayat al-Kursi. These are all gathered here with counts.
How many times do you say SubhanAllah after prayer?
Thirty-three times SubhanAllah, thirty-three Alhamdulillah, and thirty-three Allahu Akbar, then completing the hundred with La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah... The Prophet ﷺ attached enormous reward to this.
Which adhkar are only after Fajr and Maghrib?
The three Quls are recited three times each after Fajr and Maghrib, and the ten declarations of 'La ilaha illallah... ' are also specified for after those two prayers. Ayat al-Kursi and the tasbih follow every obligatory prayer.
